Episode: “Across the Sea” (Season 6 Episode 15)

Written By: Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof

The Story: Well lets just say this is the first time in almost six seasons of the most compelling show on television where I have gotten officially pissed off at Lost. What seemed like the episode that would explain every major question we have ever wanted to know about the show – Explain the Smoke Monster? Explain the Island? Whats the “real beef” between Jacob and the Smoke Monster? (okay they sort of answered that) The show just seemed to go back to what is the best and worst thing about it…answering a question with more questions?

The episode starts off in what I guess is the Roman times where a young woman named Claudia is pregnant and survives a shipwreck leading her to the island. With the help of a mysterious stranger that weaves tapestry in a cave, Claudia, is nursed back to some health right before she goes into labor birthing twins – Jacob and “No Name” (Man In Black). The mysterious stranger, a woman known in the whole episode as Mother, kills Claudia and raises the twins as her own. Jacob and his brother grow-up with no knowledge of who they really are only that they will live a simple life with this mother character. Strolling on the beach young Boy In Black finds a game that he asks Jacob to play with him. The game uses black and white stones. The kid somehow “knows how to play the game” while Jacob rats him out to Mother for playing it. She tells “boy in black” that he is “special”. Later in the episode she shows them some light cave, which was lame. The cave is later revealed to be the heart of the island or “the source”. The Mother makes it to where the boys can never hurt one another and tells them they can never enter the cave. She also tells them that a little bit of the same light that is in the cave is inside every man but that people always want more (more cryptic Lost language). The episode plays on to basically show a rivalry beginning between the two kids. Oh yeah, there is people on the island too and the boy in black eventually goes to live with them because he knows thats where he really comes from and that Mother killed his real mom. He is told this by an apparition presumably the evil smoke monster that we still do not know any origin about.

Ultimately the episode’s climax is that of Jacob, older, killing the Man In Black for killing Mother. He does this by throwing him into the cave of light where after a few seconds pass… that smoke monster comes out. The body of his brother is found though and Jacob places it next to the body of Mother and with the bag of stones leaves them in the cave. These are the same two bodies we saw in season 1 that Locke refers to as “our very own Adam and Eve.” Okay so smoke monster is the bad thing that needs a dead person as the vessel? I get this…and its crap!

Mother shows Jacob and Man In Black The Cave of Light or Source or Wonders - whatever the crap it is - lame!

The Cave of Wonders? I kept wondering where Aladdin was with his pet monkey and the magic carpet because the cave of wonders was on the show. I thought this was the defining moment this season that shows me the writers really have no clue how to explain the idea of Lost that may have been there from the beginning. My dislike for the cave of light is sort of the catalyst for other dislikes I had in the episode. I mentioned above the show begs more questions with only on answer to a series long mystery. So all we know about this “cave of light” is that it is the source of the island…”its what brought you here.” Wait hold on? who hell are you Mother? how the crap did you get here? why do you know so much? What was that crazy language you mumbled while drinking the wine? why did you not give Boy in Black a name? Are you an alien? angel? what the crap is going on crazy lady?

Like I said this cave of light is the catalyst of many ridiculous questions I have that now the show only has 3 and a half hours to answer on top of maintaining some sort of character driven nature to keep us hooked. Anyone else see a problem here? The revelation of a light cave is one of the dumbest things ever and the major pieces of this episode I feel could have been a flashback moment like in Richard’s episode “Ab Aeterno” and show is some modern day island stuff going on…or perhaps Jacob post death maybe? Nope instead we get a slow paced waste of time.

Adam and Eve Revealed…Finally: well one of those season one mysteries is finally off the check list. BTW if someone has a Lost checklist send it over because I’d love to see how close we are to having it complete. Here is the problem with Adam and Eve as glad as I am its out of the way. This was like 450 AD or something yet the great Doctor Shepherd summizing in the Season 1 episode ” The White Rabbit” that the bodies have been dead for 40 or 50 years. Yay! way to have continuity you jack asses! how does that make any sense or is this another question you are raising? you pretentious crack writing team of Lost.

Mother tells Man In Black she is "sorry" and then gives us a big F-You like these writers

Pacing: My pal Josh Wigler over at MTV summarizes this issue greatly on how Across the Sea and perhaps others this season have been slow at a trepid pace. “The Candidate is an excellent example of the season’s pacing issues. Sayid could have easily and naturally died in the first episode of the season, but instead, his character was dragged out in mysterious but ultimately unimportant ways, only to explode on a submarine. Jin and Sun, too, essentially shuffled their feet all season long for one extremely hurried reunion and a prompt, admittedly tearful execution. These are moments that could have occurred throughout the season, rather than saving all the gut-punches for the final handful of episodes.”

I couldn’t agree more having watch this episode last night it all just hit me like a ton of bricks that this season has sacrificed a lot in the name of pacing. Like I mentioned above this episode would have been better served as a one or two scene flashback while other things were happening on the island. So now we have more questions than answers..again, a new character in Mother that will need some explaining and a light in fucking cave!

No wonder they extended the finale 30 minutes they have to cram more into it now because they have wasted time with this junkie stupid episode.

To Conclude: I am mad because this episode seemed like such a waste of time and you may think I am not a real Lost fan to think this but tough…as a real Lost fan I do not hide behind the blanket and ignore it but rather call them out…those writers…those stinkin writers. I hold the show to a standard and right now they are below that bar. Maybe the next three and a half hours will change all that as I will still watch but with fire in my eyes and concern that my hopes for a show that I once thought was calculated is nothing more than writers with a dart board coming up with junk.

Next Week (May 18, 2010): The next episode is titled “What They Died For”. There is no synopsis yet but will probably harp on the recent deaths of the show and how the remaining characters cope with that as they move forward to tell us hopefully what the hell is going on.

Its Tuesday and that means Lost is back with another episode making it the 7th of the Final Season and this one could be the most anticipated in awhile because it centers around fan favorite, Ben Linus, played perfectly by Michael Emerson.

In tonight’s episode titled “Dr. Linus”, Ben deals with the consequences of an uncovered lie and according to ABC’s promo last week, may reach his demise. It will certainly be interesting as all we know so far is Ben has directly been the cog that has set this war in motion with the murders of the real Locke and Jacob. Also his sideways flash self may provide some answers as all we know at this point is that he is a European history teacher at the same school “Sideways Locke” is at. With Lost its always intriguing and this episode is sure to be a mindbender being that it revolves around Ben.

The episode also plans to return guest star Alan Dale as Charles Widmore along with Tania Raymonde as Alex, Daniel Roebuck as Dr. Leslie Arzt and Jon Gries as Roger Linus. William Atherton will be playing the Principal Don Reynolds with Steve Boatright as an officer.

Season 6 opened with a bang and I wanted more. So, I did what any Lost-obsessed dork would do and downloaded the new Season 6 promo and ran it through a slow motion feature in order to nab some tantalizing screen shots.

However, before we get to those images I’ll start things off with the actual promo and then move on to three scenarios.

Okay, moving on.

The slow-motion examination of the above video revealed what looks like three very interesting segments that carry a lot of implications. I’ve ordered them below and added a few thoughts and musings for fun.

Now, get lost.

Scenario One – Sawyer and Locke on Cliff

These images reveal Locke (or whoever Locke is) and Sawyer standing on a cliff. Sawyer starts to descend a rope ladder. Subsequent images show Sawyer in a free-fall.

The ladder may have snapped on its own. Let’s face it, it looks rather ancient (possibly borrowed from the leftover props of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom).

Then again, this incarnation of Locke may have pushed him. After all, our favorite bald-headed mystic didn’t exactly show his sensitive side in the season opener.

Could this be the end of the gruff yet charming Sawyer?

Scenario Two: Jacob and Locke and the Scales of Justice

I find this scene particularly intriguing—especially if you go back and watch the scene of the ‘real’ Locke showing Walt the basics of backgammon. You can actually watch that scene on YouTube. Here’s the Link: the game.

In light of these images (sue me for the pun), Locke’s explanation really piques my curiosity when he tells Walt that, “Backgammon is the oldest game in the world. Archaeologists found sets when they excavated the ruins of ancient Mesopotamia. Five-thousand years old—that’s older than Jesus Christ. Two players. Two Sides. One is Light. One is dark.”

Are these stones the origin of backgammon? Is this the ancient’s game? That would make sense considering the Spanish promo for Season 6 that showed Lost as a chess-like game on a black and white board: pawns of gods.

Perhaps that’s what Locke meant when he told Ben that he’s a ‘who’ and not a ‘what’ after he went all primordial smoke on our asses. Are he and Jacob ancient gods (of some sort) playing a game? And with Locke claiming the white stone is it a prize, the end of the game, or perhaps an indication that he has been good all along?

I still say that anyone who is unfamiliar with Philip K. Dick’s novel The Cosmic Puppets should go read its summary on Wikipedia, which is here. Seriously? A small town comprised of two layers of reality. Supernatural warfare. Twin, but diametrically opposed ancient demigods locked in battle. Sound familiar?

Let’s not forget that we have already seen the work of Philip K. Dick in Lost (Season 4 – Episode 4 – Eggtown). Locke Brings Ben a copy of Dick’s VALIS. For more, visit Lostpedia.

Scenario Three: Jack Shatters a Mirror of Light

After hearing Jack demand to know why his name is on this, we hear Hurley scream “no” in protest (admittedly this arrangement could come via the magic of editing). Jack then swings a club of some sort. In the first image we can see a possible reflection of the club, which could indicate it’s a mirror of some sort. However, it’s definitely a glass-like object (maybe even a giant hourglass).

As the glass shatters, a bright light explodes from the object. Perhaps, this resets the game. Is it possible that the alternate stream of reality introduced in the season opener takes place after Jack wallops this thing? Jack did find a strange cut on his neck—shrapnel from his home run swing?

I looked around online to see if I could find some symbolic reference point, either in fiction or mythology but with no success. So, if you have any ideas, then please feel free to email me some insights or suggestions.

So as we know Lost: Season 6 will not be airing any new footage in the promos as we are told the first 4 eps have so much spoilerage material that it would kill the last season’s mystery and intrigue if they showed us anything. I can deal with that so in the mean time we have the promo posters to tie us over. Unfortunately this poster doesn’t do much for me in any way, fashion or form. In fact it looks a lot like the teaser poster we posted not to long ago. In order, those listed are: Faraday, Boone, Miles, Michael, Ana Lucia, Charlotte, Lapidus, Shannon, Desmond, Mr. Eko, Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Locke (or Locke’s back, to be more precise), Ben, Sayid, Libby, Sun, Jin, Claire, Hurley, Juliet, Charlie, Richard, Bernard, Rose and even Vincent, the dog! Missing is Whitmore, Penny and Walt (interesting…).

So a few months ago we posted that Stargate star and genre actor, Michael Shanks would be portraying Hawkman for an all out Justice episode of Smallville. The episode is said to feature the complete Justice Society and is being written by famed comic book writer Geoff Johns. Originally he was to appear in two episodes called Society and Legends but the CW as decided to make a tour hour movie event out of it called Smallville: Absolute Justice. The site is also reporting that the two-hour event has switched airdates from January 29 to February 5.

Besides this information we also have a first look at Shanks as Hawkman courtesy of TV Guide.

E! Online recently debuted the first Lost promo for Season 6 (watch below) but when you see it you will be shocked! No not because it is awesome but because it doesn’t show us any new footage for the upcoming last season of the series. E! Online got the answer as to why that is.
“I’m...[ more ]

E! Online recently debuted the first Lost promo for Season 6 (watch below) but when you see it you will be shocked! No not because it is awesome but because it doesn’t show us any new footage for the upcoming last season of the series. E! Online got the answer as to why that is.

“I’m hearing from Lost sources that every single shot of the first few episodes are so revealing that the producers have convinced ABC to NOT SHOW A SINGLE FRAME before the new season airs. No promo scenes, no photos, no nada! So you will be completely in the dark, but it is for good reason: The twists they’re planning are so good, you will WANT to be surprised.”

I find this particularly interesting that they will not show any new scenes of the series until the premiere. That excites me as well as somewhat perturbs me because I am beginning to feel Lost envy again. I need a fix and that can only be helped by just a little tidbit but alas the marketing is working because it gets that much more excited for the premiere in January.
