Lionsgate Locks Simon Beaufoy to Write ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel
Lionsgate may be paving the way for itself to be the movie studio with the hit young adult noel adaption with The Hunger Games, since it just locked Gary Ross to direct the sequel and Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours) to pen its script, reports The Wrap. The Beaufoy pick up shouldn’t come as a huge surprise since Lionsgate was courting the scribe to come in an pen the screenplay adaptation to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
But the biggest surprise from the site is that Ross is coming back to direct Catching Fire. Word was that he was going to come in as a producer and that Lionsgate would be looking for someone to replace him. But it seems like the movie studio is confident enough in his vision that that brought him in for a second round. No doubt if Catching Fire is successful, the movie studio will bring him in for the third and fourth films. Makes the most sense since the final two movies are from one book.
For those that don’t know, Catching Fire takes place after the events of The Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s victory at the games has been seen as an act of defiance. Rumors of a rebellion are coming into light with Katniss and Peeta becoming the face of the rebellion itself. Now The Captiol wants to put a stop to this, even if it means holding another Hunger Games. Catching Fire is not yet greenlit, but is already set for a November 22, 2013 release. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Woody Harrelson are expected to return.
