Darren Aronofsky or David Slade Could Direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2

I got to hand it to 20th Century Fox. They are pulling in some creative talent to helm their slew of X-Men spin-offs. First, they were able to entice Bryan Singer back to produce and originally direct X-Men: The First Class. Then Singer bumped out of directorial duties and Matthew Vaughn was there to pick up the helming role.

Wolverine 2 is the other project in development and has been moving forward recently, with Hugh Jackman jumping ship on a project to make room for his commitment to playing Wolverine. Now it seems the studio is anxious to peg down a director to begin pre-production.

Deadline New York has reported that previously-rumored director Robert Schwentke has dropped out of contention for directing the film, most likely because he may have committed to the R.I.P.D project.

The trade site is now reporting that Darren Aronfsky is in the mix now to direct the film, but that the studio’s favorite is David Slade. Star Hugh Jackman does have a lot of clout on the project and could very well side with Aronofsky, whom he worked with on the film, The Fountain.

The rumored plot for the sequel will focus on the relationship between Wolverine and Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord, and what happens to Logan when he escapes to Japan after the Three Mile Island incident of the first film.
