Geekgasm: Analyzing The Super 8 Teaser Trailer! What’s This Film About Yo?

Last week there was so much internet hoopla revolving around a trailer attached to various prints of Iron Man 2. I was lucky enough to get to see the trailer at my showing of Iron Man 2 even in Memphis, TN which is great because the bootleg that circulated around the internet on Friday didn’t do it justice. Earlier last week speculation was that the movie was related to the unknown but long speculated follow-up to the JJ Abrams produced, viral injected Cloverfield movie. Reports even went on to discuss what the trailer would be and sure enough they were completely inaccurate.

If you didn’t get a chance to see the trailer I will do my best to describe it below.

Trailer Description:

The Paramount logo shows up then cuts to a dark screen with some subtle cricket sounds chirping. Then you hear a train chugging on some tracks. The flashed up on the screen was a the phrase – “In 1979 The US Air Force Closed a Section of Area 51.” The camera cuts to some railroad crossing lights flashing with the crossing bells sounding. You hear something screeching in the background like a car or something then the camera cuts back to another phrase on the screen that says, “All materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio.” While you read that there is some chatter on a walkie talkie or radio that you can hear. A quick cut to a screeching truck skidding down a road we see it do a 180 on to the railroad tracks headed for the train. The train blows its whistle. “From Producer Steven Spielberg’ flashes on the screen. Then we cut back to see the truck hit the train and an explosion happens leading a chain reaction derailing the train. As the fire rings out and the cars on the train begin piling up on one another, “from director JJ Abrams” pops up on screen. The camera cuts back to the tracks and the wreckage at a low angle and it moves along the track until it arrives at a door, “Next Summer” pops up then cuts back to the door. We hear metal rustling around and electric wires sparking and “It Arrives” shows up on screen. The door has the Air Force logo on it and is locked by a one of those old compressed tight wheel locks. The wheel lock spins and from inside the door we hear pounding and the door being pushed out in spots and right when it blows out the camera whooshes until all we see is a lens from a super 8 camera an then the title “Super 8″ flashes on screen.

I am sure if you search hard enough on the internet you can watch the bootleg teaser trailer but we are not sure when an official one will be released. Rest assured once we do we will let everyone know. So sitting in the theater I heard a lot of whispers and talking from folks all around saying things like “WTF” or ‘Holy Shit! JJ and Spielberg I got to see this shit!” there was one guy that “yelled out – lame!” and then there was another guy that yelled out “Its Cloverfield 2″. Lastly, there was 3 knuckleheads in front of me that turned around and said “What’s this film about yo?”  Like I had any idea.

So what is this movie about yo? Specifically know one knows only that JJ and Steven are co-producing with Abrams directing and it will ode itself to the classic 70s and 80s films Spielberg used to make i.e. Close Encounters of a Third Kind, Jaws, etc. What I can tell you is what this movie’s foundation will be about based on the information provided by the trailer. Specifically the train and the screen telling us that there was a section of Area 51 closed and materials were being moved to a secure facility in Ohio.

Well this leads myself, and I am sure others as I can’t imagine I am not the first to write this, to believe that this movie will revolve around the connection between Wright Field (now Wright-Patterson Air Base) and Area 51 where presumably both parties were linked in there studying of the Roswell crash from the 1940s. Supposedly, Wright-Patterson AFB is known among those involved with UFO conspiracy theories as the home of Project Blue Book and because of its connection with the Roswell UFO incident of July 1947. Some believe that Hangar 18 at the base was assigned to the Air Force’s Foreign Technology Division, along with the Area 51 installation in Nevada, and contains, or once contained, wreckage of a crashed UFO. Presumably you could say that is what was being transported by the train in the trailer guess they missed a hidden.

It is a well know fact that in 1947, a plane left Roswell heading to Wright Field with several packages aboard. A couple of these obviously contained crash debris, and one larger crate, which more than likely held alien bodies. This particular crate was about 7 x 7 feet, plenty big enough to carry two of the aliens, which were approximately 3 1/2 foot tall. A fork lift operator who loaded the crate into the plane stated that for its size, it was extremely light, further substantiating the theory of alien bodies being on board. There was also a delivery of bodies and crash debris to Ft. Worth, Texas. So Hanger 18 and Area 51 have this a connection which I am assuming this movie is going to play at.

My guess is the train was obviously transporting alien(s) from Area 51 to that Hanger at Wright-Patterson and that wreck made that not happen. Presumably the movie will revolve around a loose ET that will wreak some havoc on a small town and its all captured on a Super 8 camera. I can’t wait to see this film and here more about it. The concept, the conspiracy and the movie’s developers are enough for me to fill that seat in the theater. Oh yeah and like Spielberg’s Jaws we will not see an alien until the near end of the movie.
