Net Crawl: Possible New Look for New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Update - We thought this was fake hence why this is all speculation. I got an email from someone close to the artist of this piece saying:

“NOTHING to do with the next TMNT reboot. It is in fact a student’s class-project, done at Tom Savini’s make-up school, in South-Western Pennsylvania.”

Cruising the net this weekend I came across a picture of what looks like a possible designed for the new look of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the live-action reboot. The image came from Latino Review who received it with no further explanation. The assumption is that could be a first look at what the Turtles could look like. Take a look at the new image below.

Our pals also pointed us to a report from MTV from last April, that seems to correlate with the above photo that this really could be a new design for the Turtles.

“The basic idea, as  I understand it, is to do an all live action shoot, with actors and stuntmen in full Turtle suits,” said Laird. “To add expressiveness to the Turtles’ faces which would be difficult if not impossible to get with animatronics and/or puppetry, there would be ‘face replacement,’ with CGI Turtle faces superimposed on the live action performers’ heads.”

In case you are not sure on what they are saying here its a lot like what Spike Jonze did with Where the Wild Things Are using Henson creations with cgi markers on the mouths to then computer generate realistic expressions. I really like the look as they represent the turtle aspects a lot more clearly but you can also get a sense they want a darker more sophisticated tone to the movie with the more realistic turtle look being slightly creepier than the cartoony ones from my childhood.
