TV News: Syfy Wants Another Battlestar Galactica Related Series?

It seems Caprica has not got quite the buzz and following that BSG got in his 4 seasons at Syfy. We are speculating that this is one of many reasons that the network wants to pursue other BSG related series and go the way of Star Trek with multiple spin-offs set in the same world and universe.

The report comes from THR, after talking to network President Mike Stern,

“We’re looking for other ways to spin off Battlestar Galactica beyond Caprica,” stated Mark Stern, Syfy executive vice president of development. “That world is so rich. We’re sitting down with (executive producer) Ron Moore and his team. It would not necessarily be a traditional series.”

Caprica, is okay, it doesn’t have the space battle extravaganza that BSG brought to the table but does have those dark overtones and richness of character that fans have come to expect from Galactica. I also loved the Gattaca type feel it brings. My complaint is that is has too much of this weird mix of teen angst, hedonism and virtual reality that I can’t sit through. So what to do with a third spin-off, here is an idea, copy Firefly. Seriously, use the idea of a random bunch of ragtag skelton crew guys who after the first Cylon war, decide the universe is going to hell, in their travels stumble up a new plot by the Cylons and other issues. Thats a show I would watch in a heartbeat. I am sure Moore will come up with something crazy though.

In the meantime watch SGU, its a lot better than BSG and Caprica, ooh! problem solved!

SGU better than BSG adn Caprica?! That's the problem. Everyone wants action and movement. The rich characters is what made BSG in the first place. The fighting and action was a sidebar because it was the reality of their day to day lives. That's what made it so mesmerizing!

If action was everything we wouldn't idolize Marlon Brando, Humphrey Bogart, or even Brad Pitt (remember he got his start with Legends of the Fall, a character flick). Its always a character show or movie that makes an actors career and wins public admiration.

Its time we evolve back to the basics (which sounds rediculous, until you think about it) andforget about action and movements and try to learn about life and real world truths through these character.

In Caprica that would be, jealousy, revenge, greed, persistence, honor, evolution. Very dark when you throw them all together!

(as a sidebar, I'd love to see an espisode that teaches how to play Pyramid. Look what the Dodgeball movie did for the gym sport. Maybe professional leagues will spawn up cuz of the show. Could be cool!)

I see yuor point but think SGU is the perfect middleground because it has the action elements that are necessary but is very much about characters, their survival instincts and flaws, BSG was too depressing and too dark, same thing with Caprica. Also Caprica is not that interesting to me, the story the characters the concept. I saw Gattaca and Blade Runner, plus they are working towards something that we already knows what happens, bring something new where the end game isn't already known.
