Neil Gaiman and Matthew Vaughan Want to Make HBO-Style Series for Sandman
Matthew Vaughan who has become adept at adapting comic book, graphic novels into films starting with an excellent film in Stardust and now the long awaited much anticipated Kick-Ass! At some point Vaughn was throwing around another Neil Gaiman creation to develop in Sandman. Apparently that project is still something he is hung up on.
MTV Splashpage spoke to Gaiman, who mentioned that Vaughn believes the Vertigo series would be better served by an HBO TV treatment as opposed to a big-screen theatrical presentation.
“I think it would make an amazing HBO series, you know, where you can just really create that world,” Vaughn told MTV. “There’s too much to get into an hour and a half, two hours.”
Damn right there is too much, 72 issues of awesome material that just wouldn’t be best served for a film adaptation. The developers believe the series could last 10 seasons and rival that of Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Sopranos in how it could balloon to that? hell throw Smallville in their too.
All I have to say is if Vaughan and Gaiman got the series on HBO I would buy the premium cable station just to watch it.
For those who are unaware of what Sandman is where Neil Gaiman weaves the story of a man interested in capturing the physical manifestation of Death but who instead captures the King of Dreams. One of the episodes in the series is “24 Hours” which is one of the most chilling examples of horror in comics. What’s even more creative is that Gaiman personifies Death as a perky, overly cheery, cute goth girl. The series is perfect for HBO’s programming and is one unbelievably one the best comic book series of the last 10 years.
