The Casting Couch: Sam Worthington Headed to The Fields, Shailene Woodley to Follow The Descendants, Lucy Punch is Bad Teacher, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton Take on The Thing

We had to bring in an extra couch for this day of casting news as we are full up with numerous news to go around tinsel town. First up, everyone’s list topper, Sam Worthington is set to star in The Fields.

The Avatar star is going to star in the murder mystery Texas Killing Fields. Michael Mann will be producing this film via his Forward Pass production company. Worthington will play a hometown homicide detective who joins forces with a New York transplant to fight back against the unknown killers. The movie is based on a “true story of a pair of police officers who undertook to solve two decades of disappearances and homicides — totalling as many as 60 victims — in the industrial wastelands surrounding Gulf Coast refineries.” Mann’s daughter, Ami Canaan Mann, is going to direct this project from a screenplay by Donald F. Ferrarone. The movie will start shooting in April in Louisiana.

Next up, the star of Secret life of An American Teenager, Shailene Woodley is going to join George Clooney in Alexander Payne’s, The Descendants. Based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, follows an attorney (Clooney), “who is forced to get closer to his daughters after a family tragedy.” Woodley is going to play the oldest daughter. Payne is going to direct the film and produce along with Jim Burke. The script was adapted by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

A name that many may not recognize unless you watched the short lived CBS sitcom, The Class, or know a lot of about British actresses, Lucy Punch is joining Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher. Columbia Pictures is making this film. Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg wrote the screenplay. It centers on Elizabeth Halsey (Diaz), she is “a foul-mouthed, conniving seventh-grade teacher who pursues a colleague after being dumped by her sugar daddy.” The new love interest puts her in conflict with Amy Squirrel (Punch), the school’s top teacher. Punch will next be seen in Dinner for Schmucks.

Last but not least we have our stars for the  remake of  John Carpenter’s The Thing, which is already a remake of The Thing from Another World. That being said the two headliners of this sci-fi horror thriller will be Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton. Winstead will be playing a Ph.D. candidate who comes aboard a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. A trapped organism gets freed and engages in a series of attacks. Winstead is forced to team with a mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to contain the rampage.

The 1982 Carpenter made a version starred Kurt Russell. All the films are derived from a 1938 short story, “Who Goes There?” that was published by Astounding Magazine. Matthijs Van Heijningen is going to direct this movie from a screenplay by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer.
