Net Crawl: Cliff Chiang’s Geek Art, Including Funny Star War’s Imperial Propaganda Art & Superhero Album Covers

Cliff Chiang is a graduate from Harvard University with a joint degree in English Literature and Visual Arts, he worked in editorial at Disney Adventures Magazine and Vertigo/DC Comics before making the leap into freelance illustration. His clients have included DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Dynamic Forces Entertainment, and the ACLU, on books such as: Batman, Dr. Thirteen: Architecture & Mortality, Beware the Creeper, Human Target, Detective Comics: Josie Mac, Green Arrow & Black Canary, Grendel: Red, White, and Black, Red Sonja: Monster Isle, Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman.

Fused Film reader Donny, from Memphis’ Comics & Collectibles, passed his site off to us for our Net Crawl feature and we couldn’t help but post some of his great Star Wars’ inspired Imperial Propaganda Art as well as some Comic book hero inspired album covers such as a Batgirl “Purple Rain” or Elektra going “flashdance” – ooh! “I am so excited” just writing about it. The Vampirella on is a mock of a Duran Duran album cover for Rio. Patrick Nagel was the artist who did the album art of which he is best known for along with his illustrations for Playboy magazine. Chaing seem’s to have pegged the design and form of Nagel perfectly.

"I’d love to revisit this idea from the Rebel point of view, too. Maybe next time?" - Cliff Chiang

"This was a blast to draw. After years of brush inking, it was liberating to grab a pen and just mess around. I think the brilliant source material inspired me to experiment and play with the look of the piece, and it turned out to be a great learning experience. I’ve still got a few more ideas for other album covers that I’ll get to soon." - Cliff Chiang
