Box Office: Dear John Takes # 1 Over Avatar with $32.4 Million, No Love for Travolta’s Paris

Sitting a top after eight weeks was the juggernaut, Avatar, raking in tons of money, including becoming the highest grossing film of all time domestically and worldwide. However, coming into its ninth week, it was kicked off the top spot for the first time with the romance drama Dear John getting the best of it.

This wasn’t a surprise to many analysts who would tell you that Dear John had the right audience in mind for the weekend but also because Avatar was projected to drop due to decreasing the amount of theaters it would be available in. Dropping 24.6% this week it was shown in 74 less theaters than the week before, however it still managed to make roughly $7,867 per each of the film’s 3,000 theaters earning $23.6 million in its eighth week and bringing its total box office earnings up to an unbelievable $630 million.

The top film, Dear John is based on the novel by The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks and stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried as distant lovers earned $32.4 million in its opening weekend, which was enough to become the new box office champ and easily earn back its $25 million production cost. The movie opened in roughly 3000 theaters and earned almost $11,000 per theater.

The buddy spy film that earned harsh comments from critics and positive buzz from the bloggers, From Paris With Love came in third. The film, which starred John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys-Meyer, was seen in 2,722 theaters made $2,983 per theater earning a total of $8.1 million in its first week.
