TV News: Fox and Russell T. Davies to Bring Torchwood to the US
Torchwood, one of the best shows on the BBC and a direct spin-off of the famed Doctor Who series, heads stateside as Fox orders an American remake of the series.
Russell Davies, creator of the original Torchwood series, will be writing the pilot script for Fox. Joining the remake will be members of the original production team like Davies’ producing partner Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter. It was also hinted that some of the original cast members may also be joining the project. One name in particular came up, and that’s John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness.
The British series deals with the machinations and activities of the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, an organization that handles incidents involving extraterrestrials.
Presumably, the US version will focus on a US branch of the Institute designed to do the same thing. However, that is pure speculation since the news release states that the show’s stories will have a more global setting, which could hint at a multinational organizational structure.
No production schedule was revealed.
Personally, I am certainly looking forward to this American-styled reboot of the series; and I also wonder if they will tie this version of the show into the BBC version as well as Doctor Who (which starts its new season this spring).
However, American fans who think this might signal a new Doctor Who series for the states shouldn’t hold their breath. Doctor Who is a national treasure across the pond and it’s probably going to stay that way.
