Neill Blomkamp Discusses Future of District 9 and His Next Untitled Project

Ever since Neill Blomkamp fell onto the scene with his instant cult hit District 9, many have wondered if he would develop a sequel, especially based on how the movie ended. Surely the studio is keen being that the budget was low on this film and it grossed very well domestically as well as overseas. Blomkamp has also been attached to projects floating around Hollywood as well seeing him as one of the upcoming hot directors. For awhile he was attached to the Dune project after Peter Berg left.

It seems as if Blomkamp wants to for the time being work on his own original material and with the success of District 9 there is surely excitement to be in business with him.

The Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex Blog recently spoke with Blomkamp about his future and his next film. He wouldn’t give any specific information such as title, but he did reveal a few details about the stories concept.

“The setting for the next film takes place 150 years from now. There are two cities that I’m choosing between. They would play as themselves. They are not in South Africa. The success of District 9 has made things a lot easier. I can get other things made.”

While talking with the LA times about his future project he did take time to address the sequel or possibly prequel rumors for District 9 and what he thinks might happen.

“But a sequel might be interesting. I know what I’m doing next so it wouldn’t be right away. But the concept of aliens in Johannesburg is such an appealing idea to me and the issues of race and how they meet. All of the things that I had going on with it. I wouldn’t mind messing around with it again. I’m open to it if the story works and there’s a reason to do it. And [Copley's character] Wikus is so funny to me, I’m very interested in a sort of passive racist like that. If you go forward [with his story beyond District 9] it’s more of a traditional film but if you go backward I’d be intrigued in that. I’m not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting.”

I find that interesting because the one thing I liked about District 9 was all the events before the film that section of time that happened before the events in the movie. However, I am interested to see what happens with our hero next. I think a prequel would be far more interesting if the story is right but at the same time so would a sequel. Can you say trilogy?
