Avatar’s Success Could Mean Future Star Wars Films in 3D?

A few months ago a rumor spurred out that there could be a possible new Star Wars trilogy in 3D and that its happening would rely on the success and response from audiences over James Cameron’s Avatar. That rumored wasted no time in getting debunked and then internet absurdity ensued. Now it seems that basis may not have been entirely off or if they were not there with Lucas at first they are now.

Access Hollywood recently spoke with George Lucas and he revealed the technological breakthroughs in Avatar could lead to 3-D versions of his Star Wars films.

“We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3-D,” George explained to Access. “But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.”

Well there you have it James Cameron has built the technology to be able to take Lucas’ beloved universe and vision to the big screen in 3D. I am as excited about this as I was when the rumored popped up the first time. It will be interesting to if Lucas takes this on himself or brings on Cameron or other filmmakers to direct a new trilogy. Obviously the news is just conjecture at this point from Lucas but it doesn’t surprise me that his ego may be needing tug soon since his films are becoming more and more overshadowed with a new generation of filmmakers and directors bringing unbelievable stories to life. All I am saying is imagine a super bad-ass lightsaber battle in 3D and the space battles too. I am down with that for sure.

Um, nothing George Lucas said implies he's planning more Star Wars films. What's he very clearly said is that he's trying to find a way to convert the already existing Star Wars series into 3D so he can re-re-release it in cinemas and milk it for some more of that stuff he likely uses as toilet paper by now. That's fine, and I might even buy tickets if it happens, but please stop twisting things around and getting our hopes up for Episode VII.
