Sam Worthington to Play…Everything in Cinema? Aussie Actor Now Rumored for Flash Gordon?

A majority of Hollywood is on cruise control ’till the beginning of the New Year but that truly doesn’t stop the internet rumors and blogosphere from collecting casting rumors and all the other production gossip there is.  One story in particular hit our radar this morning from Hollyscoop (a source about as reliable as me saying “the sky is falling”)

Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds are two of only a handful of actors on the Flash Gordon shortlist according to the site and their “source”.

Hollywood has lists and there is no doubt both these guys are on it. It seemed not so long ago that list used to look like or at least I would assume would have looked like this – Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Will Smith and so forth. Now different names seem to be synonymous and more sought out for large blockbuster budget material. Hugh Jackman is one of those guys, so is Matt Damon and even Christian Bale.

However 2 guys seem to be right in the thick of it and they are Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds. I do not see Reynolds touching this project because he is already carrying the weight of two different franchises, Green Lantern and Deadpool, so carrying a possible third would just be hard to schedule and maintain. Worthington on the other hand seems to be a guy that people will cast in anything and his name is always thrown around for stuff or at least as of late it has.

In fact there was a ridiculous rumor that came out last year he would replace his Terminator co-star, Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne in the next Batman film. Since then Worthington was loosely attached to play Mad Max in the fourth film in that franchise, which seemed like the role any Aussie born actor would love to fall into. Its funny really how one movie changes you, Worthington was just a small-time guy who garnered attention in one year polarized by a Terminator reboot of sorts to being the lead man in James Cameron’s Avatar. Worthington will be seen next in the Clash of the Titans remake and will probably be rumored to play Captain America from now until the studio decides to make a casting decision (I know think about an Aussie playing the pinnacle American superhero).

Breck Eisner, who’s just finished up The Crazies remake is rumored to helm the Flash Gordon reboot off a script from Mike Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Worthington seems like the logical short list choice as his star is becoming rapidly bright and large with blockbuster 2009 prowess and a poised 2010 shine as well. I say let him play everything in cinema, because he’ll be at least rumored for everything that I am sure. Personally I am not a fan of the guy, he still needs to maintain control of his accent slipping, secondly he needs to find a director that knows how to play to his strengths – Cameron is sort of that guy.

Could you see Aussie Actor, Worthington, play All-American Golden Boy Flash Gordon? Thoughts below please!

Sam for Bruce Wayne in the next Batman film?? Then it would be a failure that's for sure! Christian Bale BEST BATMAN EVER!!!! Don't make me laugh!

If Worthington can keep his American accent from slipping, I could see him as Captain America or Flash Gordon. If not him, it'll probably be some other foreign actor with an impeccable American accent.

I'm a diehard Flash Gordon fan and when I say diehard I don't just mean the 1980 film, I am also a huge fan of the original film serials (Spaceships on strings and Iquanas standing in for Dinosaurs to boot). I feel Worthington would be the better choice over Renyolds but if I had it my way Paul Walker would be Flash but he's suddenly dropped offf of the radar so he may not be a good box office draw. I'd also think Josh Lucas would be a good choice but again he also has not been in the spotlight since 2006's Poseidon.

These two guys are just hyped like Pattinson and other “sudden” stars are. Hugh Jackman or Matt Damon have been working for years to get where they are now and they are still not considered unltimate stars. Even thought the word “star” is associated with Jackman in many ways because he really is the old-fashioned kind of star. That isn´t “IN” today, unfortunately, so these guys have to come. Reynolds is fine but don´t go crazy. All he can do is telling funny lines. Worthington is in three major blockbusters but people are going to see the movie because of the fact that it´s a popcorn blockbuster, not because of some unknown guy in the opening credits. He still has to prove he can act in a movie outside the green screen. I am sure Worthington did some impressive work in Australia, Jackman was the same, but 90% of movie goers don´t know that and it could cause his fall (maybe even faster than his rise)

Yeah, but Worthington can barely keep his Australian accent from slipping, let alone his american one.
He is a Brit after all.

    Um, impressive work in Australia?
    Sam Worthington?
You aboviously have not seen Rogue, Thunderstruck or a crap TV show called The Surgeon.
    Impressively crap stuff.
Don't get too exited about this guy.
Luck still has more of a say in destiny than talent or deservedness.
