Rumor: Hawkman Solo Movie Getting Developed?

Hawkman1Smallville, the hit Superman series on The CW, is premiering a TV movie this February that will feature a significantly huge DC character in Hawkman. Playing the role is Michael Shanks from SG-1 fame.

It seems DC might be keen on testing Hawkman’s commercialism with the mainstream. This might be because DC comics wants a Hawkman movie.

Pajiba is saying that DC Comics and Warner Brothers are developing a Hawkman movie that is being described as “part Indiana Jones, part Da Vinci Code and part Ghost” (via @firstshowing).

One of the biggest reasons why Shanks was sought out was because his typecast as Daniel Jackson on Stargate, an archaeologist. Like Daniel Jackson, Hawkman’s alter ego is just that. Carter Hall, a reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian prince, Khufu, who had in the modern day discovered that the mysterious “ninth metal” could negate the effects of gravity and allow him to fly. He donned a costume with large wings to allow him to control his flight and became the crimefighter, Hawkman. An archaeologist by trade, Hall uses ancient weapons from the museum of which he was curator in his efforts. I can see the correlation with Indiana Jones and the Robert Langdon type character from the DaVinci Code, however I am not sure about the Ghost reference (maybe the reincarnation aspects), which irks me to be honest.

I am not a big fan of Hawkman but I support most comic book characters being adapted into films as long as they are done right.

Hate to be a comic geek but it's Nth metal, not Ninth metal…LOL

I can see a Hawkman movie working. Hawkman's look and demeanor would play well in that format. It seems like a much more solid concept for a movie than the upcoming Green Lantern movie which runs the risk of being incomprehensible to the general moviegoer. He's one of DC's lesser known characters, but so were Constantine and Marvel's Blade and they did pretty well in the box office.

The one part “Ghost” reference probably has something to do with him seeking out his reincarnated soul mate in every life.
