First Look At Disney’s Rapunzel With New Image Online!

Walt Disney Pictures is developing an all-new take on the legendary fairytale Rapunzel. This new film is being directed by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno and will be release this Thanksgiving, November 24th, 2010. Disneypixar.fr had an exciting new photo from the 3D film which we had to post as it is the first real look at the film that we hadn’t seen yet.

A concept rendering of Rapunzel, demonstrating the "luscious hair" former director, Glen Keane wanted.

The concept of the film is very interesting when you start hearing about the animation style. It will be made in CGI though it will resemble traditional oil paintings on canvas to bring the warmth and intuitive feel of hand-drawn animation to CGI. The animators have been referencing paintings by French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard, The Swing, applying a certain richness that they have never attained in animation before. It seems that the main ambitions of the makers of Rapunzel is to create movements that are just as soft and fluid as of that in the old Disney Classics.

Rapunzel, an action-packed, swashbuckling, animated musical comedy about the girl behind 70 feet of magical, golden hair. A princess stolen from her parents’ castle as a baby, Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore) is locked in a hidden tower longing for adventure. Now an imaginative and determined teenager, she takes off on a hilarious, hair-raising escapade with the help of a dashing bandit (voice of Zachary Levi). With the secret of her royal heritage hanging in the balance and her captor in pursuit, Rapunzel and her cohort find adventure, heart, humor, and hair… lots of hair. With original music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, this comedic re-imagining of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale comes to theaters in Disney Digital 3D™. The film will be released on November 24th, 2010.

The rest of the voice cast is really solid including voice talents like Donna Murphy, Matthew Gray Gubler, David Schwimmer, Jim Cummings, John Goodman, Carol Burnett, David Cross and Jason Alexander.

As I am writing this, I don't quite believe what I am seeing. If this is an actualy movie still, than Disney has finallly found their niche. They have solved the problem of aesthetically-pleasing CG. It looks like a painting! A gorgeous, hand-crafted, artisitic, honest-to-goodness Fragonard!

I must see another image to better judge this, or even a trailer so I can see how well the CG applies the “squash and stretch” principles of cell animation. The silhouettes are so traditional animation looking, they're almost scary. Disney's “Nine Old Men” are smiling in their graves.
