Discuss: Should Avatar’s Success Make A Case for ThunderCats Movie Being Developed?

I saw this interesting post on Io9 earlier today and I thought it poised for an interesting discussion here. Apparently it was recently disclosed that the long-awaited live-action adaptation of ThunderCats has been put into the development hell locker by Warner Brothers.

The script the WB had was  based on Jerry O’Flaherty’s CG animated Thundercats origins story, from the animated pilot. The story revolved around the heroes leaving their home world before it was destroyed. Landing on “Third Earth” they face evil to protect the human race of extinction and the wrath of the Mutants from Plun-Darr.

Last year a ThunderCats fan trailer (see below) was developed and was recieved highly in the fan community and blogosphere for its ability to make a strong case for a live-action movie.

So the discussion is: With the success of Avatar and the creation not only of alien spieces the Na’vi working out but the creation of the world of Pandora, whats to stop from doing the same or similar with ThunderCats? Let’s take the immediate benefit of having an already built in fanbase and endless merchandising potential with toys and such that just can’t be ignored. That should be reason enough alone.

Putting the project to sleep raises a lot of questions? Does Warner Brothers not see the potential or is it deeper than that? Is it the fact they are wary of the script? or is the filmmaking technology used on Avatar so new and costly they just can’t justify the ROI?

Time will tell but I think no one can ignore the successful impact Avatar can/will have on making a film like ThunderCats happen and others like it come to life on the big-screen.

What do you think?

Should Avatar’s success play into the development of a live-action ThunderCats? Should the WB even look into its development because of Avatar alone? What other things should they consider?

Avatar was absolutely incredible. The scenery = amazing. After I watched it I was blown away to find a tv channel that believes in many of the same ideals. http://www.TheSkiChannel.com talks about the mountains and how they are meant for everyone. Preservation is important right this very minute. Great stuff on there as well and unbelievable scenery on their website.

Wouldn't it make equal sense to suggest that all mythical movies follow Avatar's lead? You can paint with a pretty broad brush here, I don't think ThunderCats has any special quality that lends itself to the idea more than other movies. Eternia or Etheria would look equally spectacular in Avatar style 3-D in fact many of the plants had a MOTU feel for me.

By the way, WB decided to put T-Cats on hold a LONG time ago. This isn't news. It was originally reported over at http://www.thundercatslair.org last August.
