Roland Emmerich Wants to Make Back-to-Back Independence Day Sequels
Back on October 13 there was some conversation about Roland Emmerich wanting to return to the world of Independence Day with a sequel. Now with 2012 opening tomorrow Emmerich has spilled more beans on what he has in mind for second film.
While talking to MTV Movies Blog Emmerich revealed he wants to make two sequels to his 1996 blockbuster Independence Day.
“What we want to do in the next – it’s actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc,” he explained. “Independence Day was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that.”
While there is no script for the projects as of yet, as it’s still in the idea phase, Emmerich did suggest a title.
“‘ID4-ever,’ Part I and II maybe?”
I am not sure how I feel about another Independence Day film. i love the first one. Every July 4th my family and I watch it. We quote every minute and just have fun. There was so many things about that movie that make it a classic as well as a milestone in movie marketing as well as blockbuster action formula. I feel like a second or third film would cheapen the first. In terms of story how do you not risk telling the same thing over and over?
I mean I would assume the same alien species comes back pissed off and with more weapons and stuff and better shields, maybe a defense against weak ass computer viruses. But that is cool because a whole Homeworld Security has been formed by the UN and spearheaded by former President Whitmore, who is now the defacto head of state or something like that. Will Smith’s character is head of the special Alien soldier fighter group lets just call it Nest (okay so that is a rip-off). Anyway, 15 years have gone by and Jeff Goldblum and other scientists have been intigrating alien tech into society while using it to come up with better defense against another unforeseen alien invasion/extermination. anyway all that blah happens, you have more epic air battles, maybe a shot of the alien homeworld, new romances, blah.
I just do not think this is something worth doing, I’d much rather see Emmerich do a Stargate sequel which would make more sense being it was actually left open for one.
