Martin Campbell Talks The Green Lantern Special Effects
Martin Campbell, whose next film project, is none other than The Green Lantern took some time to talk about the special effects of the film. The director of Bond films like Casino Royale and GoldenEye plus other action/adventure films like The Mask of Zorro is tasked with the most daunting challenge of bringing to life the world of Hal Jordan and DC Comics world of The Green Lantern.
A regular conversation between my friends and I is how this movie will look on camera citing Campbell himself its a film that encompasses the fantasy elements of Lord of the Rings but with the space adventure of Star Trek. Combining those two elements makes it very tough especially when there is a semblance of the 21st century reality involved. Oa is going to be tough to pull off but so is making the aliens like Sinestro, The Guardians, Legion, and the other Green Lantern corp members as well.
Campbell has now come out talking about the same concerns regarding the challenge of the special effects this movie will have. He admits it will be a big challenge bringing to life a hero trained on another world to wield a ring of great power and join an intergalactic group of space cops..
“It’s daunting. Just the process, something like 1,300 visual effects shots, it’s mind-blowing, quite honestly.” Campbell explained that the amount of FX work was due to the Green Lantern’s powers generated through his mystical ring.”It’s energised by a battery on the planet of Oa, which taps into the willpower of everyone in the universe. From that ring you can form constructs. So if you got into a fight, you could form a giant fist. Or a fighter plane.”
I am cautiously optimistic about his film though i have read the script and loved the first draft all my reservations revolve around the special effects but also perhaps more importantly the look of Hal Jordan in the suit. If Campbell reads this post I would suggest and I am sure he will to watch Abram’s Trek as well the LOTR and Narnia films but also Favreau’s Iron Man. All of those will be great resources to build the visual style and foundation of the film.
FYI, we posted some concept art for the film awhile ago and you can see just a basic idea of what type of visual effects will be in store for this film. Those art shots were illustrated by Brian Murphy.
Green Lantern is scheduled to hit theaters summer of 2011.
