Box Office: Twilight Saga’s New Moon Crushes Weekend with $140 Million
The sequel to the teen vampire series of ridiculous and almost unbelievable fame made a vampire style killing in the Box Office this weekend.
Based on the Twilight book series by Stephanie Meyer, New Moon, took out its competition this weekend to take the number one spot in the box office. The film was released on 4,024 screens and made an amazing $34,965 per screen for a record setting $140 million opening weekend total, putting it third in all time opening weekend tallies right behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3, respectively.
The alternative to the teen vampire drama also had a surprising opening taking second place. The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock in a story about Michael Oher, the starting left tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, who was homeless on the streets of Memphis until one kind family gave him a chance at life through football. It made $11,096 per screen on 3,110 screens for an impressive $34.5 million opening weekend at the box office.
Last week’s winner 2012, went down two spots, as expected to make additional $26 million this weekend bringing it’s total to around $108 million a little over half of its purported $200 million budget (Eeks!). I do not see it getting better for that film domestically as Ninja Assassin, Princess and the Frog, The Road, Me and Orson Welles and Old Dogs opens over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Not to mention Boondock Saints II continues its new openings across the country as it opens in Memphis and other places on Wednesday.
