Box Office: 2012 Destroys the Weekend with $ 65 Million

As to be expected people did show for the end of the world. Roland Emmerich’s latest white house detroying cataclysmic film, 2012 churned out $65 million in a box office beat down. The question is will it make its budget of $260 million? That will remain to be seen but we speculate with domestic sales and global sales it should by the time it ends its theatrical run. Last week’s number one, Disney’s A Christmas Carol, fell around 25% raking in only 22 million for the weekend.

Both films were shown on over 3,000 screens in a wide release.

1) 2012 – $65 million
2) Disney’s a Christmas Carol – $22.3 million
3) The Men Who Stare at Goats – $6.2 million
4) Precious – $6.09 million
5) Michael Jackson’s This Is It – $5.1 million
6) The Fourth Kind – $4.7 million
7) Couples Retreat – $4.25 million
8) Paranormal Activity – $4.2 million
9) Law Abiding Citizen – $3.9 million
10) The Box- $3.1 million

In case you wondering and we were too. How did Boondock Saints II continue to do as this weekend it opened up in more markets? Well when it opened it only came out in 68 theaters where it brought in almost $550,000. This weekend it expanded to more locations giving it about 251 screens allowing it to gross $1,008,000. We are not sure if this will allow the Saints sequel to continue to open in other markets but we are really happy how successful the film is.
