TV News: NBC Sets Up New Spy Project With JJ Abrams

It seems like everyone is the JJ Abrams business these days and for NBC, which has struggled introducing new shows over the past few years is now officially in the JJ Abrams business.

The network has closed a deal with Warner Bros. and Abrams’ Bad Robot for a spy drama Abrams co-wrote with Josh Reims.

The spec sparked a bidding war when it hit the marketplace last week, with ABC, NBC and CBS.

The project which is a return to the “spy” arena for Abrams after his successful Alias franchise seems to be a perfect counterpart with NBC’s fan favorite Chuck, also in the “spy” vein. The series will revolve around two spies working together who also are husband and wife.

That doesn’t seem original to me nor does it scream anything fantastic other than the fact it has Abram’s name and production company Bad Robot attached.

ABC and Fox are both running Abram’s vehicles. Lost, is gearing up for its final season on ABC whereas Fringe continues to be a fan pleaser with its second season on Fox.

Now just because it has Abrams on it doesn’t mean it will be successful so NBC is sort of on the gamble. A few Abrams shows like Six Degrees and What About Brian both didn’t make a full season. Reims, Abrams co-creator on this NBC project, first worked with Abrams on his WB Network series Felicity and was an executive producer alongside him on ABC’s What About Brian.
