Top 5 Directors We’d Love to Direct More Star Wars Films

By: Kevin Coll and Donnie Valentine

So these lists have been done before, probably too many times. However we thought at FusedFilm that the rumor of future Star Wars films in 3D with new directors behind it made this list slightly relevant for the end of the weekly news. Site contributor Donnie and I really sat down and thought of some our favorite young directors and creators in the business today and this is the list we came up with. I wanted Tarantino in there but just couldn’t bring myself to the fact his Star Wars movie would have some Jedi complaining about tipping a slave girl since that is her job you know? “No one tips me for hunting Sith all day.” Other guys we looked at were Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski and Jon Favreau.

So below is the list tell us what you think in the comments.

1. Neill Blomkamp - You look at this guy and his humble beginnings as a special effects animator for Smallville, Stargate SG-1 and Dark Angel and then his triumphant partnership with Peter Jackson for his feature film debut with District 9, based off his great short film. The guy is a sci-fi guru and his skills in animation combined with his creative writing just screams for a cool Star Wars movie, whether it be original or based off something in the expanded universe. Blomkamp is arguably the best choice for directing 1 or 2 movies in the Star Wars universe.

2. JJ Abrams- Many would say there is a conflict of interest here. The guy brought us a new Star Trek after saying he was not a fan, to me that sounds like a conflict of interest. Abrams has to be on this list based off his track record, his creativity and the guys who would help him make a Star Wars movie. Guys like Orci, Kurtzman, Lindelof. Could you see Greg Grunburg in a Jedi outfit? I know I could. The only interesting thing is he wiped canon for Trek reboot, would he do the same thing with Star Wars? doubtful but this is someone every geek, even Abrams himself would love to see, maybe not Paramount though.

3. Joss Whedon - I do not think we could have this list without our boy Whedon on it. He has an idea and he sees it through ingraining himself into every aspect of the film, story and the characters. Whedon’s penache for blending in subtle humor with drama is perfect. Not to mention Nathan Fillion as Dash Rendar or someone like that would be pimp and Whedon at the helm would be even pimper. However, the down side is he’ll probably cast Elisha Dushku in the movie and that would just downgrade the talent potential a Whedon Star Wars film could have. It would still be better than the prequels talent level though.

4. Sam Raimi- Why wouldn’t you put him on this list? He has already proven he can transcend his horror tastes with the Spider-man franchise why not have him do a Star Wars film. Raimi is a guy with some good sense of visual stylings needed for the universe but sometimes he is only has good as his screenwriter. Still he is a good enough candidate to make this list for us.

5. Michael Davis- I know what you are thinking. Why not Peter Jackson or Guillermo Del Toro here or anywhere on this list. Well because they have LOTR and The Hobbit, they should stick to that trilogy, but also simply put they are too obvious of choices. Davis is a great director that can put together some amazing action on camera. His film Shoot Em’ Up was awesome. Say what you want but we know his Jedi/Sith battles will look cool as shit!

Come on, JJ Abrams? Sam Raimi? Joss Whedon? We don't need fanboys in charge of Star Wars. Star Wars is Lucas's baby, his love of composition and editing is what makes Star Wars what it is. Thankfully we'll never see any of these guys making a Star Wars movie. Let Blomkamp make his own sci-fi epic, he's the only one from the above list that could go on to become an artist of Lucas's stature in the future.
