Scoop: Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman To Bring Back Hawaii Five-0 for CBS Television

So we do not get a lot of scoops but this one is major and we had to post it. My source which is a good one tells me that writing team heavyweights, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, are developing a Hawaii 5-0 remake for CBS Television.

My scooper tells me:

“going to script is a new version of Hawaii 5-0 which CBS will be revamping the classic series like other networks have tried to do with such shows as Knightrider, Melrose Place, and 90210 but this time there’s some muscle behind it. Star Trek/Transformers writers and Fringe co-creators, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci along with CSI:NY executive producer and writer of the cult hit Demolition Man, Peter M. Lenkov, will be penning the pilot. No other names are attached but with these guys behind it, it should be a revamp worth looking out for!”

I think this is great with shows like Burn Notice and CSI being major hits combining style within investigative procedural dramas, Hawaii 5-0, provides a interesting platform as well as Hawaii as a character within the show like Miami in Burn Notice.

Hawaii Five-O ran for 12 seasons on CBS, from 1968 to 1980. The twelfth season was repackaged into syndication under the title McGarrett. This is the second attempt to bring the series back as a one-hour pilot for a new series was made in 1996 but never aired. it was produced and written by Stephen J. Cannell, it starred Gary Busey and Russell Wong as the new Five-O team. James MacArthur briefly returned as Dan Williams, now governor of Hawaii. Several cameos were made by other Five-O regulars.

It will be interesting to see what Kurtzman, Orci and Lenkov come up with but my scooper tells me he is optimistic that this will go past pilot and air and with those creative heavyweights who wouldn’t be optimistic, I know I am.

I still recall how good Don Stroud was as Captain Chambers in the old Mike Hammer series and as Captain Lussen in The New Dragnet. He was born and lives in Hawaii so he'd be easy to cast. Even though he is over 60 now I think he'd be great in a regular role in the new Hawaii Five-0. Stroud is the quintessential tough guy and always compelling to watch. Gravel in the gut and spit in the eye. He played memorable heavies in Licence to Kill, Coogan's Bluff, Joe Kidd, and Madigan. He actually had billing above Robert DeNiro as Herman Barker in Bloody Mama in 1970. I hear he is in great shape and could do any role.
