Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4 Villains…Rules Out The Lizard
MTV Splashpage had an interview with Sam Raimi last week where we discovered the date in which the long-awaited sequel will begin production. We were told that they would be dropping more stories throughout the coming days and weeks on more interesting tidbits about the film.
Today is one of those tidbits where we finally edge a bit closer to what villain will web tangle with Spidey in the next film. While he didn’t reveal exactly who the villain would be in the film, he did talk about how they were approaching the villain, which you can see below, he also pretty much ruled out The Lizard.
While Raimi “loves” the story of the Lizard, the Spider-Man team isn’t exactly looking to tie up those little mentions of Dr. Curt Connors. Instead, look for a baddie who will toy with Peter’s internal and external demons a little bit:
“What we’re trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome. Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain-and we’re trying this right now; we’re trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict.”
With all the teasing of Dr. Connors that has been rifled through the first three films I am sort of happy they aren’t using him. They can continue the teasing in this one. Some villains just do not work and I can tell they really want to make this movie very character developing and there needs to be a villain that is capable of creating that development for Peter, much like the Joker did in The Dark Knight for Batman’s journey. Do I have any idea who it could be? Nope, not in the least, but we shall see in due time. My gut tells me it could actually be Venom again and here is why? Gary Ross was brought into re-write Spider-man 4 and he is now attached to direct and write the Venom spin-off. What if there is a connection there? just a theory but Venom would be a great nemesis to corrupt that journey for Peter and his coming of age and since he was already introduced in the third film there is a lot you can do with the character.
