Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods Pushed Back to January 2011?
I first saw this story on Collider, with them reporting that Joss Whedon’s new horror movie The Cabin in the Woods has been delayed an entire year. I got an email from my MGM contact confirming the push back as well. Whedon’s film was originally set for release on February 5th, 2010 but will now be pushed back to January 14th, 2011.
Why? Because they’re converting it to 3D and because of that there’s limited date options for 3D films. The reason behind this decision is that because “early reactions to the film have been very positive and we think 3D can help it reach a broader audience.”
Horror 3D is becoming ever so popular these days with successes in films like My Bloody Valentine and Final Destination. Now Halloween 3 is going 3D and so is a remake of Night of the Living Dead. So MGM is looking at the benefit of the 3D business and how immerse horror can be in that format.
My issue with 3D is it can look gimmicky when the film isn’t originally designed for that. Now who is to say Cabin didn’t have that in mind and they were just waiting on the response from early focus groups and their response.
Good to know that the early buzz of Whedon’s film is positive as I have been looking forward to hearing more from this. The plot has been mysterious since the beginning of the film’s production but what we do know is that it provides a new twist on a classic scenario, in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, the two leads, will play white-collar coworkers with a mysterious connection to the cabin beyond that its about a group of college kids that spend a weekend at a mysterious cabin in the woods.
Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Keith David, Fran Kranz, Kristen Connolly, Brian J. White, Amy Acker, Tom Lenk, Jodelle Ferland are all confirmed cast members for the film. Joss Whedon co-wrote the script with Cloverfield screenwriter and former Buffy writer, Drew Goddard, who is also directing the film.
