George Gershwin Biopic Set Up At Dreamworks

DreamWorks is putting together a biopic on one of the composers in history, George Gershwin.

The studio bought the script from writer Doug Wright, who penned the highly acclaimed Memoirs of a Geisha. Apparently, the deal for the script sale is almost near complete.

The film is said to follow Gershwin’s life, from his early years in Brooklyn as the child of Russian immigrants to his untimely death in Hollywood in 1937 at age 38. Throughout his short life, he wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows with his older brother Ira. His music continues to be used in commercials, TV and films. In fact, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris are among the most recognizable musical works throughout the world.

I had the chance to see Crazy for You once which is based on Gershwin’s Girl Crazy and it incoporated music of his from other plays as well. The music was fantastic with the songs like I’ve Got Rhythm. I would love to see a film based on his life and hope they get a great director to really bring that scope out as well as an actor as well.
