Gary Ross to Write Venom Spin-off and Possibly Direct?

Last week we were told that Zombieland writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick would be writing the screenplay for the Spider-man spin-off, Venom. The writing duo in fact had written 2 drafts for the film and they said that the studio would “push forward in whatever way they push forward.”

Well they are pushing forward without the 2 writers and are bringing in Spider-man 4 scribe Gary Ross in to write a new draft.

Ross picked up writing duties on the Spider-man 4 script after previous drafts were written by James Vanderbilt and David Lindsey-Abaire. Vanderbilt is writing Spider-man 5 and 6 with a possible reboot in mind. Now Ross is switching to Spidey’s enemy. The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision Blog has the story and also mentions that Ross would produce and possibly direct the film.

Ross isn’t new to directing he directed Tobey Maguire in both Pleasantville and the Best Picture nominee Seabiscuit.

In the comics, Venom is a gooey alien parasite that bonds with Peter Parker and later his newsroom rival, among other people, becoming one of more popular villains in “Spider-Man’s” rogues gallery. Topher Grace portrayed the character in the 2007 movie, which ended with both the human and the alien symbiote apparently destroyed in an explosion.

It is still unclear if Grace will come back to portray the character or if someone else will play his alter ego or host body – Eddie Brock. The plan was to always show Venom as an anti-hero and his main antagonist would be the popular Carnage character, another symbiotic life form with a host, though Ross may have other plans.
