Fox to Retell Story of Moses in the Vein of a Braveheart like Reimagining

Variety reports that former NewsCorp president Peter Chernin will take on his “first significant film project acquisition” for Chernin Entertainment as he and Fox aim to deliver a “retelling of the story of Moses, from his near death as an infant to his adoption into the Egyptian royal family, his defiance of the Pharaoh and deliverance of the Hebrews from enslavement.”

The script will be written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, who recently completed a scripted retelling of Herman Melville’s classic story of Moby Dick for director Timur Bekmambetov at Universal.

When we posted about Moby Dick we were told that the story was going to be visually told in the epic scale of a “300″-like reimagining, hence why they got Timur Beckmambetov to direct. It seems as if the story of Moses is conceived similarly by the writers duo.

“The goal is to give a “Braveheart” feel to a story most famously captured in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956 film “The Ten Commandments.”

Cooper and Collage’s most recent writing credit was the comedy Accepted, which starred Justin Long. They also scripted the latest draft of Tower Heist, which Brett Ratner will direct for Universal and Imagine.

This sounds very interesting, the only other retelling of Moses was the animated Prince of Egypt film that toned down the story of the character for kids but used computer animation for the epic visual style of the film. DeMille’s film is a classic and it will be difficult to replace Heston and you sure do not want to typecast an Ian McKellan or Patrick Stewart. Besides I would assume you’d have to cast someone younger anyway.
