Dreamworks to Adapt Ghost In the Shell Manga
Ghost in the Shell was created by Masamune Shirow and was first published in 1989. Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic police thriller dealing with the exploits of the cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, a member of a secret division of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission known as Section 9. The unit specializes in fighting technology-related crimes. Kusanagi’s exploits spawned two more manga editions, three anime film adaptations and an anime TV series. The second anime film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004. Laeta Kalogridis has been tapped to write the adaptation. Kalogridis is also the writer and executive producer of Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film Shutter Island, starring Leo DiCaprio.
I know the anime fanboys will love this. If the script has enough big action sequences and makes good use of the 3D technology, this project should do well.
