Conan Remake Character Details Surface!

Moviehole has gotten a hold of some new character breakdowns for Marcus Nispel’s upcoming Conan remake. I am not going to bother posting all the descriptions but I will highlight a few here. You can go to the link above and read about the characters in more detail.

The story seems like your basic Conan origin. “Being the last of his tribe and having to watch his father die a cruel death, he is determined avenge his peoples slaughter by killing all those who led the attack on the Cimmerians, including the all-powerful Khalar Singh. He is prepared to die in order to accomplish his goal. What Conan did not expect, was to find a reason to live…”

The actor needed to portray the character would need to be around the age range of late 20s to early 30s. Muscle bound and all that crap. Someone who looks like he has been through some battles or two. I bet they would love to get Chris Hemsworth who is playing Thor because the casting is similar. Maybe there is a UFC fighter out there who’d make an interesting casting like Quinton Jackson was for A-Team.

The other lead in the project calls for the female and no its not Red Sonja. The characters name is Tamara and she is around 18 to 24 is “open to all ethnicities.” Like Conan she is on a journey and finds herself in league with Conan because of a mutual need to find Khalar Singh. She is not in the least intimidated by Conan’s size or grim demeanor and their alliance eventually blossoms into something that surprises them both…” probably love or something like that. I could see Jessica Alba or someone of her look and beauty playing this character but we shall see.

Finally we have our bad guy we have been hinting too. Khalar Singh, responsible for Conan’s tribe massacre and the kidnapping of Tamara’s Queen he is a sorcerer hungry for power. That doesn’t at all shock me. Obviously there is grim purpose to this guy and basically they need to cast someone what can play evil well.

I do not see this movie working out to well and frankly can’t see why they want to remake a classic, yeah, yeah the “its for a new generation” crap but seriously this movie doesn’t do anything new for me and visually it will look like 300 or something - woop-hee. I like the original and think it still holds up today.

Oh well at least Ratner is not directing so there is some hope the movie will be fun.

They would have gone a long way toward making this a unique epic if they stuck to the original stories that inspired them. But they blew that opportunity. Now Conan will be reduced to a B-film, worse than anything that Milius and even Fleischer. Why waste the time, money and possible talent?
  • The new Conan movie:

    1. Stop the current production.

    2. Get a Robert E. Howard expert in the same room with the scriptwriters. Have them read the books and instruct them that the Conan stories will serve as the building blocks for the movie, and nothing else.

    3. Use this film as a chance to reinvent the pop cultural idea of Conan.

Look at Casino Royale. Batman Begins. Pirates of the Carribean. All of these films took dead characters, dead franchises, and dead genres and reinvigorated them by not playing it safe. Even fans of Conan the Barbarian don’t want a rehash of that. We are twenty years older now, and we need something more sophisticated. Bryan Singer learned that the hard way with Superman Returns. This can NOT be a nostalgia project.
