Chris Pine Set for Jack Ryan Role in Tom Clancy Reboot for Paramount

It was only a matter of time we’d start hearing about the plethora of projects that Chris Pine would be “beaming” up to after his turn in the iconic Kirk role in JJ Abram’s Star Trek. Now he is apparently set to play another iconic character in the vein of Jack Ryan. Paramount Pictures has begun negotiations with Chris Pine to play CIA analyst Jack Ryan in the reboot of the franchise based on the Tom Clancy novels.

Paramount confirmed this story on late Tuesday, and in a statement, Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman said:

“Tom Clancy created an unforgettable character with Jack Ryan. With Chris in this role, we’ve taken our first step in creating a re-boot that lives up to the successful lineage of the franchise.”

Yesterday it was also revealed that Pine is also in talks to team with director D.J. Caruso in the Paramount drama The Art of Making Money about a con-artist. For awhile George Clooney was rumored to be in talks for the reboot but that was debunked when we were told that they were looking someone a little younger. Back in March Sam Raimi was also attached to direct and co-produce the reboot as well.

Talks are just getting underway, but Pine is expected to come aboard the Jack Ryan film as the project takes shape. The studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini, based on an original concept. They are still in deep development and it is unclear whether Pine would make the Star Trek sequel before his stint in the Jack Ryan film though it is clear Paramount seems to have a nice hold on their actor over the next several years.

Chris Pine will also be seen in Fox’s getaway train drama, Unstoppable, where he joins Denzel Washington in the film being directed by Tony Scott.

Jack Ryan was first portrayed by Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October but he was replaced by the role’s most iconic portrayer, Harrison Ford, for Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games. Paramount tried a reboot a few years ago with Ben Affleck in the role for Sum of All Fears but that film struggled to make a new franchise out of that. It will be interesting to see what direction they go with Pine, its very obvious we are getting an original story but will it be in the Bourne vein or something new? Time will tell.
