Warner Brothers Bails Out on the New He-Man Reboot
Warner Bros. and Mattel will not be teaming up to make Masters of the Universe. The film was planned to be a live-action reinvention of the Mattel He-Man toy line. So I guess He-Man didn’t have the power this time around. Okay bad joke but seriously this movie was just not going to happen.
Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver have been working on this project since 2007 but apparently, Mattel and the WB fell out over the direction of the project and decided “to let the option lapse this month.” In the story, He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.
Mattel is now looking to set the property up at another studio. The plan is for director John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda), who we confirmed on the project earlier this year to remain attached to the project. However, Joel Silver will not be involved as he is exclusive to Warner Bros. so a new producer will need to be found.
Mattell has had a hard life after a dismal showing of Speed Racer, though I loved it, and a stall on the Hot Wheels project at the WB for the past few years and now He-Man? Mattell is really behind Hasbro now and thei film brad expansion is just not at the level it could be. I am sure it will get set up at another studio though but with a whole new budget recall, maybe Lionsgate will nab it in hopes of garnering a decent franchiseable character like He-Man.
