Spielberg Still Set For His Lincoln Biopic + Downey to Star in His Harvey Remake?
Yesterday it was announced that Robert Redford would be directing a Lincoln film called The Conspirator, which will start shooting next month with independent financing and a cast headed by James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn.
However, for several years Steven Spielberg has wanted to bring a biopic of the famous American President to the big screen but has yet to do so opting for other projects like the recently announced Harvey, which may be starring Robert Downey Jr. possibly playing the man who sees an invisible rabbit, according to the trade. Recently his project was postponed by “budget and location problems.”
Spielberg has now updated the project which has always rumored Spielberg’s Schindler’s List star Liam Neeson to play the President. He says that, “we are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible.”
Spielberg’s Lincoln film will focus on the President’s anguish over the length and toll of the Civil War. His script is being revised by Tony Kushner. Redford’s movie focuses on a young woman charged with conspiring to kill Lincoln. So there is an obvious difference with the 2 films. Spielberg’s project will be a DreamWorks production.
