DVD Review: Lie to Me Season 1 (Blu-ray)

One of my surprise favorite mid-season shows last year was Lie to Me. The series premiered on Fox and stars Tim Roth. In the show, Dr. Cal Lightman (Roth) and his colleagues at The Lightman Group accept assignments from third parties (commonly local and federal law enforcement agencies), and assist in investigations, reaching the truth through applied psychology: interpreting micro-expressions and non-verbal communication through the Facial Action Coding System and body language.
The series doesn’t differ from any police or crime procedural drama we have seen but it is a show with a lot of meat to it. The difference with this show than other ones of its genre is the content and how the crimes are solved. The science and skills seen in the show (lie detection) is something new to crime shows and makes for a interesting way to tell the stories much like Fox’s Bones, this series has that as a unique style combined with the team aspect that make these shows work.
Perhaps the success relies in the star Tim Roth who is so believable as Lightman, a person who is so jaded by most people for theit ability to lie and lie often. Also Roth gives that edge to him where he needs it, like when he is being a father or when he is being a friend to his collegue Gillian Foster (Kellie Williams). Another character worth raving about in this series is the aforementioned Foster, played by Kellie Williams, looking far more classy and tasteful than she did on her stint on The Practice. Like Roth, Williams, does a great job portrying a smart and confident psycologist with a great sexy quality to her that you can’t ignore and the professional relationship between her and Lightman works well and carries the show quite far.
Ultimately, I applaud the show for its well placed humor (when needed) and its ability to add something new to the crime procedural. Roth and Williams bring a nice upscale quality not usual for this type of program and the ensemble cast is good too. The Blu-ray in my opinion is a solid buy and compliments the series, For fans of the series its a must buy featuring many deleted scenes for all the episodes and a cool featurette called “The Truth About Lies.” Also the Blu-ray is worth it simply because the sheen and nice look of the show comes out in its crystal clear format. Now, could there be more features? Sure but for a show that only had 13 episodes for its first run this isn’t bad i would expect the Season 2 Blu-ray to have more to offer. I will say that sometimes less is more and the lack of features doesn’t take away from the purchase as the episodes are more important anyway.
Consensus – A Definite Buy
