Todd McFarlane Updates New Spawn Film?
Todd McFarlane, via his Twitter recently announced that he is currently writing a new Spawn film. He says:
“I’ve officially begun writing the Spawn screenplay. The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years. Will continue to update. The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a stand alone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary. The tone of this Spawn movie will be for a more older audience. Like the film Departed.”
This movie will mark the second live-action adaptation of this highly influential Image comic. McFarlane is the creator of the Image comic character. He produced the 1997 film that starred Michael Jai White. The history of the character’s film continuation goes back to 1998 where a direct sequel tentatively titled Spawn 2, would star Michael Jai White. McFarlane had stated that the film will be primarily centered around the detective characters Sam and Twitch, leaving Spawn without a speaking part.
During a FanboyRadio.com interview, Todd McFarlane confirmed that the sequel would be changing to a franchise reboot – not a direct sequel – and would be similar to a Batman Begins and mixed with the syle of the 2004 version of The Punisher and 2008′s Punisher: War Zone.
Recently as of 2007 plans were made for Todd McFarlane Funding to make a new Spawn movie, scheduled for release in 2008. The movie was simply to be called Spawn, according to Home Media Magazine. I guess we now know what the plan is so it will be interesting to see how it unfolds over the next year and we’ll keep tabs on his Twitter.
I like the character and I am excited to see how this new film will look as well as of Michael Jai White would come back for it or if they would cast someone new for the role.
