Spielberg’s Next Project is Harvey

Steven Spielberg’s next film will be an adaptation of Harvey , the Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by Mary Chase.   Harvey will be a co-production between 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks, and will be the first screenplay written by popular novelist Jonathan Tropper.

Harvey is the sory of Elwood P. Dowd, an eccentric man who develops a friendship with Harvey, an invisible rabbit who is over six feet tall.  The play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944, and was previously adapted into a film in 1950 starring Jimmy Stewart and Josephine Hull.  Spielberg will coproduce Harvey with Don Gregory, and Elizabeth Gabler and Carla Hacken will oversee the film for Fox 2000, which acquired the rights in 2008.

I have never seen the original Harvey but I have been told that it is a very interesting film. Once again, Spielberg seeks out diverse subject matter with which to amaze us.  Harvey is a quirky premise, but a good script and Spielberg’s name will give this project a buzz.
