Gunsmoke Remake Gets Writer in Gregory Poirier

Greg Poirier, known for his National Treasure: The Book of Secrets script, is now being hired by CBS films to write the remake of the classic western series, Gunsmoke. Westerns are becoming the rage again or at least the idea of taking something traditional and putting modern action twists on it like Jonah Hex is doing, Cowboys vs. Aliens or even the new Sherlock Holmes film.

Risky Biz Blog has learned that CBS Films is developing a feature remake of the long-running TV show and has signed on Poirier. The action-adventure will re-imagine Marshal Matt Dillon, the hero of the classic Western, for modern audiences. The story will be set in the same American West as the original but will feature a contemporary look and modern action twists.

Gunsmoke was an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman MacDonnell and writer John Meston. The stories took place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. The radio version ran from 1952 to 1961, the television version ran for 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975 and it is the second-longest running primetime fictional program in U.S. television history.

I guess Hollywood sees remake potential in everything these days – not only does it revive a brand but it allows for writers, directors and actors to be involved in something they may have loved as a kid. The Lone Ranger is a prime example of a very old property getting a remake and will feature new modern action while hopefully adhering to the character as it was always shown. I guess Gunsmoke is no different.
