District 9 Sequel is in the Works?
Shocking! (sarcasm) that this development is just coming out. It turns out the studio, Columbia, behind District 9 is interested in doing a sequel. We know Neill Blomkamp has expressed interest in the sequel and now the studio has decided get on board.
One of the summer’s biggest hypes and box office successes this is no surprise to me. Director Neill Blomkamp revealed the news in an audio interview with SciFiMoviePage, that the studio was interested in a sequel to District 9.
Blomkamp stated that there wasn’t an official story for a new film yet but indicated the new film as a prequel versus a sequel and where to take the Vikus character, played by Sharito Copley.
With the way that movie ended I would be really pissed off if they chose the prequel route instead of a sequel. The movie ends with a great sort of cliffhanger. I am not interested in seeing the aliens come to the planet for the first time and the 20 years history between the MNU and the alien integration on Earth. I more interested in seeing the characters we just met in the first film and their next journey. They need to be careful how they approach this next film as they could shoot themselves in the foot, you have to make it different but continue what you built on in the first movie (there is certainly a lot of ways to do that). I hope District 10 is made and we see the continuation of the movie that way. You want a prequel then watch Blomkamp’s short film Alive in Joburg, this is what the film was based on.
