Castlevania Film Gets Update from Producer/Writer Paul W.S. Anderson
MTV Movies recently caught up with Paul W.S. Anderson on his next video game adaptation, Castlevania, the highly anticipated, yet troubled, project based on the popular computer game of the same name, released by Nintendo back in 1986. Anderson is producing the project.
The project has recently attracted a lot of criticism due to the fact it found itself in the metaphorical “development hell” not long after Anderson was originally set to direct. The project has come a long way since having undergone rewrites and a change in director which saw “Saw” mastermind James Wan taking his place in the chair. MTV asked Anderson about the changes to the script, and tried to find out what to expect from this newly reinvigorated Castlevania:
“There’ll be the whip and there’ll be creatures,” Anderson said, referring to Simon Belmont’s weapon of choice and the mythical beasts he battles as he makes his way through Dracula’s castle in the original video game.
“James is doing a pass on the script to put himself into it with the tricks and the traps, which he is really good at,” explained Anderson. “One of the things with ‘Castlevania’ is it’s not just about the creatures but the environment trying to get to you as well. I think he is a terrific choice because a key part of ‘Castlevania’ is the intensity of being trapped within the confines of the castle, and he’s shown with ‘Saw’ that he excels with intensity in confined spaces.”
Sounds like a very dark, very claustrophobic movie which is a lot different from the typical films that Anderson does like Death Race and Resident Evil. I think Anderson and Wan labelled the project as being in “pre-production” while talking to MTV and it seems like they both work well and have really good idea that could be a nice ode to the classic Nintendo game of which I played a little of back in the day but I was always a more Wolfenstein fan.
