View-Master Movie in the Works?
Movies on classic board games and toys are all the rage in Hollywood as of the moment, besides remakes and comic-book adaptations, these properties are seeing some interesting film takes. Sure Transformers and G.I. Joe are expected but Universal’s 6 film agreement with Hasbro - Battleship, Clue, Quija and more - and even Mattel looking at some film’s surrounding their historic properties like - Major Matt Mason or Hot Wheels.
Now the classic Fisher-Price toy the View-Master, is getting a big-screen throw. Brad Caleb Kane (Fringe) has announced that he will be writing a movie based on the View-Master, the popular children’s toy that has been around since 1939.
According to GreekGeek.de, Kane Twittered that after he’s done writing Columbia Pictures sci-fi action-adventure Uprising for director Wolfgang Petersen, he will start the View-Master project for DreamWorks Pictures.
Kane says Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are also involved on the project, which is described “like the old 80’s Amblin movies: Goonies, Young Sherlock… In that vein.”
No information is set on has to how the toy will be adapted for the big screen or even a production date. We have to speculate that Orci and Kurtzman will be producing this film much like they did Eagle Eye. I also have to speculate that the film will be a somewhat sci-fi tale revolving around everyone having a View-Master but the description of it being in :the vein of Goonies” maybe the project will revolve around a young group of treasure hunters that find a View finder and in it are clues to a great treasure. Either way there is a lot you can do with a story revolving around the toy.
Oh yeah I am guessing there will be 3D for this one and that they will all be shaped like View-Masters? heh just a thought.
The cool thing is how Hollywood and Brand Management always come together. Hasbro has seen the benefit of enhancing their brands in different ways by partnering with Hollywood agents and securing A-list talents to develop stories that one wouldn’t think of surrounding their historic and culturally impacting games and toys. Fisher-Price is probably thinking the same thing.
