Top 10 Best and Worst Movies of 2009…So Far

So its 4th of July weekend and I thought it appropriate since we are at the basic midpoint of the year that I list the Top 10 Best and Worst movies of 2009…so far.

Now bear in mind there are a lot of movies I have just not been able to see yet, being I don’t cover Sundance, there are a lot of films I missed out on early in the year. 500 Days of Summer is an example of one that I was expecting to be good and would make the list on other sites but not here since I haven’t seen this yet its not on this one.

I hope there are some good surprise films on this list and that you share with us your thoughts an even your lists of faves and non-faves.

The Best…

#1 – UP
Personifying a wonderful adventure mixed with a tale about life and love, Disney/Pixar’s magic of storytelling continues bringing us the most unlikely hero combination, a 9 year old boy and a 76 year old man. Memorable characters in the form of the lovable Dug and Kevin, the rare bird, are just some of the reasons why UP is the best film of the year. The 3D presentation wasn’t gimmicky, which is good but it wasn’t immersible either. A testament to the film is that it works in both formats equally as well, a testament to its brilliance as a story. Dug is the best thing ever and he should have is own movie.
#2 – STAR TREK
What seems like an easy number 2 pick, this reboot, revision by director JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof, was something that marveled in terms of entertainment mixed with classic Trek. Chris Pine’s portrayal of the classic Kirk was great but the idea of giving the classic crewmates something more to do throughout the film was wonderful. Zachary Quinto benefited from Leonard Nimoy’s tutelage for Spock and the dramatic score by Michael Giacchino packages the film as an entertaining space opera that has revamped the timeless franchise for another 40 years.
#3 - AWAY WE GO
Adam paid this movie the highest complement he could give saying he’d take his wife to see it (she hates movies). Directed by Sam Mendes, this film is an ironically funny and sad tale of an expectant couple trying to find their place in the world. It is quirky but also charming revolving around John Krasinzski and Maya Rudolph as they seek to find a home to start a family. Finding old friends and relatives along the way the movie is as much a misadventure as it is a film about connection. The movie’s soundtrack by Alexi Murdoch is as equally important to the film as the story.
#4 - TAKEN
An intense and gripping drama starring Liam Neeson as a loving father with some kick ass skills he learned as a spy, this movie basically explores the idea of James Bond as a dad and what would happen if his daughter was taken. Great fight scenes and one-liners this movie directed by Pierre Morel was a complete surprise as a global hit. Note to self, learn martial arts, develop underground contacts in Europe and never let my daughter leave the country. We had to make this movie one the best films so far.
#5 - CORALINE
Based on the story by Neil Gaiman and following the inspiration of Tim Burton’s classic Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline is great visual film with an equally great story. Gaiman’s “Becareful what you wish for” tale is one that was as visually stunning as it was entertaining. Dakota Fanning’s voice talents were a perfect way to bring the classic kid’s character to life. Its remarkably imaginative as it is creepily sinister. A deeply felt tale that ode’s itself to Gaiman’s imagination.
#6 - I LOVE YOU, MAN
A twisting romantic comedy about a budding “bromance” between Paul Rudd and Jason Segal. I loved this movie as it was different in terms of romanticizing a friendship between 2 males as that can always be humorous. Not to mention the addition of the power band, Rush in the film made it awesome! Jason Segal’s laid back character was different from his usual uptight aggressive ones and that combined with a bumbling guy in Paul Rudd who has had no clear male influence in his life made for an interesting buddy film.
#7 - THE HANGOVER
Another buddy comedy with a twist, Todd Phillips returns to his Old School roots to bring us a bachelor party gone bad when 3 friends wake to find their buddy groom missing in Vegas with no memory. A hilarious mystery of tigers in bathrooms, crying babies, Mike Tyson and the magic of Vegas partying, this movie was funny as hell. The cast was perfect as well with Bradley Cooper poised to be a star soon and Zack Galifiankis bringing some new edgy, Belushi-esque comedy to the screen.
#8 – GIGANTIC
There is probably some better movies that could go here like 500 Days of Summer (haven’t seen it yet) but something about Gigantic hit me. After doing a focus piece on the film I had to see it and when a kind reader sent me a copy of film, I was pumped. Zooey Deschanel has some massive charm which gives her a sexy quality and cuteness that’s hard to find with actresses today. Also Paul Dano’s performance is great and is an actor we need to see more of.
#9 – PUSH
I know what you are thinking, why? However there is something I liked about this film much like Jumper last year. Push stars Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning and places them in a future where telekinetics and psychics are in almost Blade Runner fashion. The premise and backstory I think is what I dugg most about the film being that is was very comic booky with sort of an Unbreakable feel to it. Not to mention Dakota Fanning is maturing as an actress as was entertaining in the film.
#10 – TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN
I do not care what anyone says this movie was so much damn fun. A great follow-up to 2007’s hit film this movie was a special effects extravaganza with as many memorable comedic moments and thrills as the first film. Some wasted effort on characters like Skids and Mudflaps but the movie still felt like a Transformers film and that is all I need.

The Worst…

#1 – WOLVERINE
I’d have to say this movie was pretty disappointing. It got a lot of things right but more stuff wrong. The ensemble cast was bland and Hugh Jackman doesn’t do anything new to the character. The movie is in the same boat as it doesn’t give us anything we didn’t already know. Action was okay but the visual effects were just pitiful and tired. Ultimately this film was to set the tone for the summer blockbusters and it failed. Truly disappointing in every way this movie is definitely one of the worst movies of the year.
#2 - THE BATTLE FOR TERRA
This movie should have probably been number 1 but the disappointment of Wolverine bumped it to 2. Lionsgate’s attempt at bringing a sophisticated animated film this year was met with a boring tale of a preachy storyline and no interesting characters at all. The film was boring, the animation poor and the concept weak. The voice acting of Justin Long, Luke Wilson and others had promise but it wasn’t enough to save this reverse Independence Day from being a crapfest.
#3- PAUL BLART: MALL COP
An absolute crapfest is this movie. How it was so sucessful I will never know. Some say marketing blitz, others say people love Kevin James. Ultimately i found the movie weak in all areas, the comedy uninteresting, the movie idea over done and the cast sucked. I found myself smiling at times but this is a movie that fits with films like Deuce Bigalow and The Animal. A comedy created for James and his 12 fans. Definitely one of the worst movies of 2009 so far.
#4 - FRIDAY THE 13TH
This is a remake that I thought would be good and while its tension is better than the original the impact of the original was much better for the time. Call it desensitization to horror and violence but this movie sucked. I mean kids in horror movies are so stupid, you could kill them by strangling them with a cordless phone. This is a movie that had an opportunity to be off formula like Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween, instead it had the same teen characters, same sex scenes, same gruesome stuff.
#5 - DONKEY PUNCH
So a movie based on a gruesome, degrading sex position? whats to say than this is Britain’s attempt to mirror American teen horror and suspense. I can’t explain how uninteresting this film was and how shitty the acting was. The movie was just visually acceptable film that had hard to understand dialogue from its characters with weak suspense. Like Friday the 13th, the teens are stupid and their decision making probably creates suspicions in people’s minds such as “Am I that dumb?’
#6 - WATCHMEN
A travesty of a film in my opinion I couldn’t help but wonder after seeing it what the big deal was with the graphic novel. Zack Snyder proved once again he could make a pretty film but all the gruesome violence and sex just annoyed me rather than made me interested in its mature themes. I am sure the novel is better but really Patrick Wilson was the only actor besides Jackie Earle Haley who showed any range in the movie. For such a hugely buzzed film this movie should be up there with Wolverine for biggest disappointment.
#7 - KNOWING
As much as I liked this movie when I first saw it, even giving it a positive review, thinking about it over the past few months, I realize how bad it was in terms of scale and that Nicolas Cage couldn’t act his way out of paper bag. Alex Proyas showed so much prowess with films like The Crow and Dark City but has yet to give me a mainstream film that is as good as his cult stuff.
#8 – DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION
Arguably the worst film of the year by far but certain things didn’t bother me. Justin Chatwick picked a bad role but he made the most of it. James Marsters had nothing to do and Emmy Rossum was just awful. Ultimately the promise of live action Dragonball is there it just needs to right artist to bring it to light.
#9 – STATE OF PLAY
Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Helen Mirren was a promised cast but this love letter to the newspapers was boring, predictable, preachy and just not thrilling or interesting. The movie was boring a majority of the time and it nothing about it except Jason Bateman was entertaining or even gripping.
#10 – PUBLIC ENEMIES
Just released this movie fits the disappointing theme in this list with Johnny Depp teaming up with Michael Mann, how could this movie be bad? Well 2 hours and 40 minutes of long drawn out dialogues and uninteresting character development or lack thereof made this movie such a waste of a good story and a good character. Seemingly 2 tales put together it was convoluted and confusing.

  • Revenge of the Fallen may just be the worst movie ever made. That statement contains no hyperbole. It is the the most incoherent, unfunny, racist, misogynistic, anti-humanity, anti-intellectual movie I have ever seen. It is a disgrace to cognition; an unprecedented amalgam of badness. It has reached such a level of awfulness that it may warrant inclusion in the Library of Congress as the prime example of what NOT to do. It will likely be studied in film schools, and in anthropology, and sociology classes for years as the top scholars in the world attempt to unravel the mysteries of how one human can create something so damn terrible.

using big words dosent make you a movie critic. that movie was good AND funny you are a liar!
  • halleberry
ahhahhahahhahaahhaahahahahaha ^ big words? go read a book.
  • Transformers 2 was exactly what it should have been. Go back and watch and original Transformers episode and then watch that movie - they are the exact same. To say you hated it means you can never call yourself a Transformers fan.
  • Everything you said is absolutely wrong. I was a huge fan of the generation 1 cartoon (if that's what you're referring to, you never clarified which episode we should go back "and" watch) and thought the movie was ridiculously terrible. It boggles the mind how bad the movie is and how wrong they could have gotten it. Optimus Prime acts totally out of character talking trash during fights, the Fallen is a complete waste of space, Skids and Mudflap would have never appeared in the original cartoon, and the movie manages an incredible feat for Michael Bay by being the most boring action movie ever. The film is in no way, shape or form even remotely similar to the original generation 1 animated series. To tell people to overlook the massive plot holes/ inconsistencies, asinine story, terrible acting, and overall stupidity of the film is irresponsible of you as a film reviewer. If you enjoyed the film, thats one thing, but to call it a good film is ridiculous. The most disappointing film of the year by a mile.
  • Amen brother
  • halleberry
Just because a movie was what it should have been doesn't give it a pass. just because a movie comes out at any time doesn't give it the right to suck. and just because the source material sucked, doesn't mean a movie has to stick to that either. Also im pretty sure that the original didn't have a midget on there for no reason.
  • My point exactly. The idea that a movie should only be evaluated against what it was trying to do is inherently flawed. That theory of film criticism posits that if the director was trying to be stupid, loud, and racist--and he succeeds--then the film was a success. I must take issue with that. Of course, the intentions of the filmmaker must be taken into account, but there must also be detached and objective criteria by which all films are judged, regardless of genre or intent. To say that "Revenge of the Fallen" is a success is simply willful ignorance.
  • @ catherineacb:
Sorry, I wasn't aware that intelligence was frowned upon where you come from. That explains why you liked the movie.
  • ericisatool
eric u look like a big terd people who use big words use them to make up for the lack of something else but transformers movie definately didn't go along with the cartoon at all except for the names but it was a good movie ur white what racism r u even talking about i frown upon people who THINK there intelligent read ur damn paragraph tard just say u didn't get the movie u didn't like it don't be a tool
  • ericisatool
halleberry is hot and eric looks like shaggy from scooby doo
  • Why is it that doltish, torpid troglodytes such as yourself feel so threatened by acumen and sagacity? Just imagine for a moment what the world might be like if other industries and fields of study subscribed to your school of (non) thought. No really, just think about that.
  • ericisatool
shaggy eric wow i know how ur weekends are spent sittin alone with a box of kleenex and a bottle of jergens i mean whats that ur attempt to bump brains like ur smarter than everyone u just make urself look more like a terd
  • Your revulsion at the mere thought of perspicacity betrays even your open displays of ignorance and speaks to a deeply rooted self-loathing.

I'll save you the time of having to google all of those grown-up words and translate that for you:

You are dumb. You hate yourself. You deal with those obvious facts by calling other people "terds."
  • Sworth
If using big words doesn't make you a critic, then using all capital words certainly doesn't. I agree with Eric. All that Revenge of the Fallen accomplished was producing a special effects orgy.

(shorter version for cathrineacb): Me no like Revenge of the Fallen
  • That was awesome! :D
  • Thanks :) The sad thing is...I wish I was exaggerating.
  • Jdolmo
How the hell was it racist and it was funny to me just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean u have to go around bashing it with ur made up words
  • ryguy9498
jeez dude calm down i thought the movie was pretty good and i have good taste in movies
  • FUCK_THE_MOVIE_JUDGERS
HOW THE FUCK IS WOLVERINE THE WORST MOVIE OF 2009??? THAT MOVIE KICKED ASSSSSSSS. I CAME IN MY PANTS WHEN I WATCHED IT.
  • Giterdun
I find it odd that half the movies on the worst films are better than Transformers 2....
  • Very True! :D
  • Transformers 2 and Wolverine are the exact same movie. If one is on the best list, the other should be on the best, if one is on the worst, the other should be on the worst list.
  • I never got the chance to see Battle for Terra but I enjoyed ROTF.
  • lkgh
you are an idiot WOLVERINE,PAUL BLART: MALL COP and FRIDAY THE 13TH are the worst?
  • an idiot for saying they sucked? because someone could say you are one for thinking they are any good but then again I do not think ill of others.
  • Someone needs a better editor...
  • Suggestion for the worst movie EVER Everybody Dies by Josh Evans
  • Elly Grimm
I'll do ya better- The Grudge. That had to be the WORST piece of crap waste of my time EVER!!
  • jkermgard
Ok Kevin....I felt you were a bit biased between Wolverine and Transformers 2. You stated that for Transformers 2, that it felt like a transformers film and thats all you need, yet with Wolverine you stated that the film didn't give you any info you didn't already know? and that Hugh Jackman didn't do anything new with the character? I felt the opposite. Throughout Wolverine you learn things about the character that no huge x-men fan might know about the character so the origin story went quite well, whereas with Transformers, they didn't do anything new, just added more action scenes than the first.
  • noshad
hmmmmmm im gonna watch burrowers n i ll tell u latrer how it was ok b wait 4 my comment ok
  • cts222c
i know its your list and i respect that i think youve made a pretty gd list but public enemies wasent that bad and where inglorious basterds and district 9
  • william00
Well...This may be the most inconsistent list ive read in regards to 2009 movies...Taken is a ridiculous and less flattering version of Man on Fire, Push should be regarded as one of the worst movies ever made along with Transformers 2...State of Play was a bit odd but to put it on the list as one of the worst is a bit exteme...Public Enemies was great...period...i wouldnt call it confusing...but the biggest upset of this list in my opinion is Watchmen...You have it at as one of the worst movies of the year...Its possible that you misunderstood the point of Watchmen...Lastly i will say that other than the 6 movie mishaps you have a pretty decent list...
  • kevin_retard
WTF? Wolveriine is the best movie not the worss! The Dragon Ball is #1 Worse movie!
  • squrillyboy
I have to say that your ratings for "Wolverine" and "Knowing" are absolutely ludicris! "Knowing" was profound! One of the most astounding mainstream films to ever grace the silver screen! And you must be on some strong stuff if you don't think that Nicholas Cage can act. "Wolverine" was one of the best action movies that marvel has put out so far! And I'll also go ahead and say that your rating of "Mall Cop" was pretty harsh as well. Kevin James gave a great performace! Had me laughing the whole way through! Yes it has a simple and silly plot but come on, knowing the plot, were you expecting an oscar worthy film out of it?! Watch it for what it is, a silly film to have a few laughs from watching it.
  • Name

  • Alex
This top 10 list could have been written by a 13 year old.
  • XRissaXx
    Oh My Fucking God,
This Is A Persons PERSONAL! Opinion on what
This Person Thinks About The Movies They Have Watched
I Believe That People should be Able To Have Their Own Opinion
    So If You Read This
    Get Over Youselves
    And
    Leave The Person Alone
I May Not be Smart And know the proper way to use Big Words
    But
I Know That This Is Very Stupid and ridiculous
  • Mike
This list is all over the place. The reviewer comes across as lacking taste and personality:

-Mediocre movies made it to the top and bottom 10.
-A universally hated/terrible movie made it to the top 10.
-An amazing, critically acclaimed, loved by audiences (see IMDB), loved by the novelist of the print version of one of best graphic novels of all time made it to the bottom 10.

    The review lacks credibility.
  • John
no... you take Revenge of the Fallen off the ten best list!!!
  • Name
Push was absolute garbage, and after 45 minutes of Revenge of the Fallen, I was praying for the sweet release of the credits, which didn't come for another 105 minutes. Sorry guy, but after seeing these on your top 10, I really question your credibility.
  • Alex
Taken as a top 5. Your a dim wit!!

That film was a joke! Typical American anti Arab crap!
  • Sworth
Did you even see that movie? His daughter is kidnapped by Frenchmen and Albanians. Dumb. there is like only one Arab in that movie. And also it is a French made movie so.......ya.
  • Amit
I will say harry porter and the half blood prince should be added to worse one after wolwerine because it was one of the most dispointed movie
  • joe
fuck you all, get a fucking life!!!!
  • Sworth
Maybe you should. You're the one that takes time out of their day to go on a movie review site just in order to tell people to get a life. YOU are the one wasting your time not us.
  • Alex
Ok, good list, I just have one complaint. I read Watchmen about a week before I saw the movie, and the movie was an absolutely perfect remake. The sex and violence was all part of the novel, and without it, it would have done the novel no justice. Maybe try reading it. You'll change your mind.
  • Sworth
Are you a 12 year old girl? hahah i mean with movies like Up, Away We Go, Transformers, and Coraline as some of your top picks im starting to believe that you are. It seems to me that your afraid of movies with a little to much violence on them. ie Watchmen and Public Enemies. You say that Donkey Punch was just "visually acceptable" just like Transformers 2 which you said was a "special effects extravaganza". I disagree with both these statements (both these movies were shit) but if YOU are rating these movies on just cinematography and visual/special effects techniques then wouldn't you rate these movies in the same category? My dos pesos
  • Jay
paul blart was way better than terminator salvation, which was probably worse than anything listed here.
  • sam
all of this is wrong! i mean obviously transformers 2 was the best movie i've seen all year. And mall cop, the knowing, and friday the 13th were all good movies.
  • xyz
You are saying X-Men Origin is worst?
    fuck you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This site is worst. Bullshit
