Ridley Scott to Direct Alien Prequel

Fox is bringing back the Alien franchise back, which we know, and they have now signed on Jon Spaihts to write a prequel and Ridley Scott will officially reprise his role as director. We knew he was interested in producing but the director bid was in the air.

The film is set up to be a prequel to the groundbreaking 1979 film that Scott directed. It will precede that film, in which the crew of a commercial towing ship returning to Earth is awakened and sent to respond to a distress signal from a nearby planetoid. The crew discovers too late that the signal generated by an empty ship was meant to warn them.

The deal gives Fox another chance to keep the Alien franchise alive but this is with the original director and writer of the series Ridley Scott who has never expressed interest in the franchise since his 1979 film. This could be really good or really bad. Having the original vision there isn’t necessarily positive just look at Lucas with Star Wars and Lucas/Spielberg with the 4th Indy film. I find it particulary interesting that Scott is showing a prequel though instead of just a subsequent film.
