Movie Review: Moon

What do you get when you put Sam Rockwell on a space station with a robot voiced by Kevin Spacey? Well, you get Moon of course. Moon is a 2009 science fiction/thriller film by director Duncan Jones. Moon is his directorial debut. The story consists of a solitary lunar employee (Rockwell) who longs to return to his family on Earth after serving a three year contract on a space mission.

The movie starts off with the daily activities of Sam Webb (Rockwell) and his interactions with his station robot Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Two weeks before Sam is preparing to leave the station to head back home to Earth, he starts to hallucinate and starts to see a young woman with long black hair. From that point on, the mystery of this movie continues to intrigue the viewer. The audience finds more clues to what is really going on aboard the space station and what Sam Webb does to uncover the truth.

To start off, Moon is a fantastic movie. I had very low expectations going into the movie. I’m a fan of Sam Rockwell since his lead role in 2008’s Choke. In Moon, he shows his acting skills as a serious dramatic character and also as a comedic character. Kevin Spacey’s voice acting is also top notch as Gerty, a space station service robot who caters to the health and well being of Sam Webb. The main focus of the movie is on the characters of Gerty and Sam Webb. There are other characters in the movie such as Webb’s wife, Tess (Dominique McElligott) and Webb’s daughter Eve. Although, they have minor roles in the movie itself. The movie flows very well even though you only see Rockwell’s character as well as hear Spacey’s voice. The greatest part of the movie is the atmosphere of space. The director definitely makes you feel as you are up in space with Sam even though you are not. The movie soundtrack is also very soft which adds to the overall feel of the movie itself.

Overall, Moon is a great movie that should be seen by most audiences. If you’re a fan of science fiction or even just a great thriller, then Moon is the movie for you.

Total Score: 9.5 out of 10
