Monsters Vs. Aliens Sequel Up in the Air

Funny that this is a headline being the first film was the in flight movie on my way back from Comic-Con. Jeffrey Katzenburger, CEO of Dreamworks Animation, told THR that domestic audiences took to the animated feature more so than international audiences and that’s why a sequel is on the bubble for the studio.

Katzenberg said executives will make discussions of a possible Monsters Vs. Aliens sequel part of their annual worldwide marketing tour.

“We want to talk to people that are on the ground,” he said. “To get in sort of casual headline conversation can be misleading, so we’re taking the opportunity to be face to face with people and have in-depth conversations.”

The film grossed $377 million worldwide at the boxoffice, with $198 million coming domestically. Some territories performed well, while others were “very big misses,” Katzenberg said.

“Domestically it has performed at a level that would surely qualify it as a sequel, and internationally it did not,” he said.

If a sequel is not planned the series will live on in the form of a holiday themed tv special on NBC titled Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space.

I was sort of underwhelmed by the movie and its 3D, the voice acting was okay but the film was no Shrek and surely no Pixar film. I do not know how much a sequel benefit the studio in my opinion. I think a TV series is something worth exploring instead or sticking to a holiday special. I guess we shall see financially it makes sense for a sequel at least domestically.
