Is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Oscar Bound?
Some folks apparently think so. Our friend Alex Billington at Firstshowing.Net and Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com have a strong belief that the film is certainly worthy of a Best Picture Oscar Bid, especially since the field has been extended to 10 films.
“The Potter-loving beast in me has been unleashed having witnessed a film that was not only exquisite in its production values, but was also charming, funny, scary, enchanting, moving (stop me, the adjectives could go on and on) and dare I say, sexy.”
“Brilliantly directed by David Yates (he directed 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a tour-de-force that combines style and substance, special effects and heart and most importantly great performances from all of the actors young and not-so-young.”
I have to say my expectations for the film, already high, are massively higher. I have always been a fan of the film franchise which has gotten better as it has gotten older. The first three films were always a little to premature for me but when it is revolving around 11,12, 13 year old kids what would you expect. The stories like the characters evolve and become darker and scarier. I have read books 1 - 5. I read the last chapter of the 7th book to see how it ended but these last 2 films are going to be awesome to see since I really do not know the story or what to expect.
We recently did our 2009 Best and Worst Movies…So Far, we expect to add this film to the near top of the list but the other thought is that with the lack of mind blowing films this year compared to last I could totally see this movie getting a Best picture bid. I will being seeing it next Monday on the 13 so I will have some better thoughts on this once I see it.
