I saw the fansub of Ponyo some months ago and this is what I said in my review:
“To summarize the plot of Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea is about as hard as summarizing Spirited Away. It's such a weird and off-beat story that it'd never become a film if Miyazaki didn't have the cred he's collected with his previous films. I'm really trying to find words for a short description, but it just doesn't work. And the trailer doesn't help either, I can tell you.

Anyway. The film is a little differently designed than Studio Ghibli's previous works. Most things are quite simply drawn with simple, strong colours without advanced shadowing, but at the same time it's obviously very nicely animated and the backgrounds look a bit like classic paintings. High class and good looking, but nothing that will go to in the history books.”

The film is quite okay. I don't want to put it with Ghibli's best at all, but at the same time their lowest point is so high anyway.”
