DC Comics Updates Their Movie Adaptations - Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and More!

With Comic-Con being the word of the week it is natural everyone in the world is thinking about comic book movies and the future of projects like Superman, The Flash, Batman 3, etc. I know I am. Well THR had a great article with some interesting updates to a bunch of DC Comics properties, some we know of already and some we don’t. At present there are currently more DC Comics adaptations happening than at any other point since the company was bought by Warner Bros. in 1969.

Now we know The Green Lantern is getting made and the last update we got from Warner Brothers Chief Alan Horn was that was their biggest focus moving forward, other than Chris Nolan and the Batman franchise. In October of 2008 Paul Levitz of DC also updated us on stuff too…so I guess its that time of the year again where we hear whats really being done and what’s not.

Levitz said back then that, “Everyone is waiting for Nolan to sign on for another Batman, once that happens, the release date for Superman and all other future projects will follow.” Yeah that wasn’t something I was holding my breath on.

So where is DC and Warners at with their film adaptations?

Currently, The Losers will be starting principal photography this week in Puerto Rico. Jonah Hex just finished production in Louisiana. The Green Lantern recently reported that Ryan Reynolds will play the popular superhero. Fox also picked up the television series Human Target and lastly, DC set up Red at Summit Entertainment.

“One of the things that has differentiated us for most of the last 20 years is the depth of our library and the depth of the creative material that we’ve put out and the opportunities that creates for other media,” stated DC Comics president Paul Levitz.

Some point DC garnished more creative control over its properties being turned into films and the 3 biggest writers/creatives - Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman are script consultants and writers for its superhero line of movies. I guess they wanted to take a page from Marvel’s Kevin Feige.

This brought about a new treatment (from Johns) for a live-action The Flash which is currently being written by Dan Mazeau. Johns will also produce the film.

The article goes onto say that in addition to this, Warner Bros. is out to writers for pitches on Adam Strange and Aquaman. These films will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio through his Appian Way production company.

BTW - I could totally see DiCaprio playing Aquaman.

Other projects in development that the studio updated us on are: Bizarro Superman which is being penned by David Howard and Robert Gordon (Galaxy Quest); a Constantine sequel, which we were updated on in May from producer Laura Shuler-Donner; there is also two Green Arrow projects that will be done at the same time, one is an origin story and the other is a prison-set piece titled Super Max, being written by Justin Marks if I am not mistaken; and lastly, there’s talk of a Shazam movie which Pete Segal (Get Smart) will be directing.

Perhaps the biggest puzzle and roadblock for Warner Bros. and DC is that they are still trying to crack the script codes on a Wonder Woman live-action feature - something Megan Fox said was cheesy, as well as a new fresh take on Superman.

Lastly, it appears that there is nothing really happening on a sequel to The Dark Knight at present although the trade tells us that director Christopher Nolan wants to do another film.

Another project not mentioned in the article was DC’s Suicide Squad project which Justin Marks is supposedly writing being that his SuperMax script was well received. Also not updated was the much talked about Justice League film that almost happened before the Writer’s Strike sidelined it.
