Gore Verbinski May Not Be Directing Bioshock Afterall
Around a month ago we got wind that Universal was putting Bioshock on hold until they could figure out the budget problems and bring the pictures tab down. Apparently that consisted of moving the location overseas for cheaper filming rates.
L.A. Times recently spoke with Verbinski about the film being put on hold and he revealed that he might not be able to direct the film due to his schedule creating a conflict.
“The bottom line is it has to shoot out of the States for budget reasons and my schedule may be prohibitive. There’s a great script and a really interesting cast. It really comes down to the financial model now. Big movies are just not being shot in the States. I’m weighing whether I can physically go the U.K. or Australia or one of those other places with a tax rebate for a year-and-a-half.”
It was also reported in April that Verbinski wouldn’t be directing Pirates of the Caribbean 4 so he could direct Bioshock. It remains to be seen if Verbinski would go back on board the Johnny Depp pirate series if Bioshock does fall through. Personally I’d like to see that happen than he directing Bioshock, I never thought he was a good fit but it seems like Bioshock is continuing down its doomed path of budget problems and its prized director may jump ship because of scheduling. I was and still am against these budget constraints and personally think Universal is at complete fault and Verbinski may have to just settle for something else like Pirates 4, I am sure they’d like to see him come back.
