Youngblood Big Screen Adaptation Going to Be Directed By Brett Ratner
Oh, yes, people, yet another comics property is headed to a movie theater near you. Youngblood, the popular 90s comic created by Rob Liefeld, is being developed as a motion picture with Brett Ratner attached to direct. Liefeld may be familiar to some Fused Film readers for his Levis button-fly commercial with Spike Lee from the 90s. According to Liefeld, the movie is being scripted by J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, who are also writing an adaptation of the Bryan Singer-produced Capeshooters, another Liefeld creation.
Youngblood is a government sanctioned superhero team that are treated like celebrities, a far cry from the outlaw status of familiar heroes such as Batman, the X-Men, and Daredevil. The heroes are treated like celebrities and have merchandising and endorsement deals. Their stories are also a mix of superhero action, drama, and government scandal. Also, their battles are videotaped and shown to the public. Liefeld hopes that the film will have a similar tone to Marvel’s Iron Man, but slightly more violent. The story will center around Shaft, a superhero archer, and Chapel, a gun-wileding ex-soldier turned hero. Shaft, the new recruit on the team, will have conflict with Chapel.
I really think Brett Ratner should not be touching any superhero films again after that godawful X3 film, and I have only read a few issues of Youngblood over the years, but I am interested in this. The concept was ahead of its time, and with the advent of reality shows and Youtube, this seeems like a good time for a Youngblood movie.
